The countdown to the Paris 2024 Olympics is officially on and to celebrate the ever-approaching games, OMEGA has dished up a speedy new delight. Unveiled to mark 100 days to the opening ceremony, the OMEGA Speedmaster Chronoscope Paris 2024 Edition comes hot on the heels of last year’s commemorative two-tone Diver 300m but this time around, things are a little different. Make no mistake, for Paris 2024, OMEGA is going for gold.
In a fitting nod to its official duties, OMEGA has released four new 43mm Speedmaster models, each designed to honour the watch brand’s trademark approach to timekeeping accuracy. The first is a ceramic bezel full Moonshine gold reference, adorned with the brand’s proprietary yellow gold material that looks every bit a podium-topping number. Here, the integration of the precious metal across the case and bracelet feels entirely apt, providing a not-so-subtle reference to the illustrious medals on offer this year. For the reserved OMEGA fans, there is also a full stainless steel model that arrives with an anodized aluminium bezel.
However, the real star of the new Speedmaster Chronoscope Paris 2024 Edition isn’t the glamorous finish that adorns the case, but rather the stunning new dial. A callback to the original ‘snail’ designs of the 1940s that featured multiple, overlapping scales, the new silvery white opaline dial introduces three dark grey timing scales onto the watch face. A tachymeter scale (for measuring speed based on distance), pulsometer scale (for measuring a human’s heartbeat) and telemeter scale (for measuring distance based on the speed of sound) now feature prominently, again referencing the timekeeping prowess for which the brand is staking its Olympic claim.
At their core, the new OMEGA Speedmaster Chronoscope Paris 2024 releases are a unique blend of old and new, celebrating the brand’s rich legacy in precision timing while paying homage to the design cues of the past. The leaf-shaped hands and subdial hands make a welcomed return to the fray, while the subtle blackened subdials and 18-carat Moonshine gold Arabic numerals feel innately timeliness. Inside the timepiece, however, OMEGA has kept things fittingly modern.
Each of the Paris 2024 editions is fitted with the METAS-certified Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 9908 / 9909 movement, which OMEGA claims has the highest standard of precision, performance, and magnetic resistance in the Swiss watch industry. When you consider a few milliseconds could be the difference between Olympic triumph and sporting heartbreak, the emphasis on precision timing seems like a obvious choice.
Unlike last year’s Diver 300m Paris release, the new Chronoscope isn’t designed to tackle a variety of atmospheres, with OMEGA confirming this new piece only has a water resistance of 50 metres. Despite this, the maison has opted to seal the caseback rather than offer a transparent sapphire. While this is traditionally reserved for diver’s watches, it does serve an important, albeit entirely commemorative, function.
Each of the OMEGA Speedmaster Chronoscope Paris 2024 watches features a stamped medallion on the caseback. Crafted with a frosted base, this design is highlighted by a mirror-polished Paris 2024 logo, complete with the stamped words “Paris 2024” and the Olympic Rings; a design that the brand describes as a “luxurious homage to the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad”.
The latest OMEGA Speedmaster Chronoscope Paris 2024 watches will be available in the lead-up to the games, with the stainless steel on perforated black calfskin leather strap model offered for AU$15,725 and the stainless steel on bracelet model going for AUD$16,275. On the precious metal side of things, the Moonshine Gold on standard black calfskin leather strap is available for AUD$85,350, while the Moonshine Gold on bracelet will set you back AUD$54,325.
