Garmin’s Fenix Watch is Reborn as the 6X with Solar Powers

Garmin’s Fenix 6X series is launching and the new Fenix 6X Pro Solar is the lineup’s flagship watch. The “solar” comes from the transparent solar charging lens, which is a Garmin first, as well as the larger 1.4-inch sunlight readable displays. These new features reportedly extend the watch’s battery life and make accurately tracking your performance easier.

The solar lens, or “Power Glass,” actually gleans enough power to extend the watch’s battery life, which is already impressive at 21 days, an additional three days—and that’s while powering a display that is 36 per cent larger than the previous Fenix 5. The one drawback may be that the solar feature is only available on the 51mm case.

Another catch, though not necessarily a drawback, is that while in always-on GPS and Music mode, the watch’s battery life drops to 15 hours. On the flip side, if you put the watch into battery-saver mode, the battery life extends to 80 days—the solar lens adds another 40 days on top of that.

As for software, the Fenix 6 comes with a new PacePro feature as well as customisable power management (two items that the Fenix 5 did not have). PacePro helps runners keep their pacing on track even with changes in elevation. With the Power Manager, you can see how different settings and features affect how much power is being used.

The Fenix 6 also has a32GB of on-device storage for the music that you want during your workout. That’s enough memory for around 2,000 songs. It also has Wi-Fi connectivity for streaming music from services like Spotify, Amazon Music, and Deezer. Garmin continues to offer topographic maps on the watch and will record your workout sessions (running, cycling, swimming, hiking, and even golf).

Wearers can also get access to GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo satellites. The Fenix 6 also monitors your sleep and receives notifications from your iOS and Android smartphones.

The Fenix 6 comes in two versions, a 47mm and the 51mm. Both come with Garmin’s new QuickFit nylon bands and new silicone colours. As for the price, the watches start at USD$599.99 and go up to USD$1,149.99.
