If you’re looking for a rich and intense single malt whisky, you can do a lot worse than the Macallan 40. As you may guess from the less-than-subtle title, the Macallan 40 is aged 40 years, but what you don’t pick up on in the name is that it is matured in hand crafted sherry oak cases in Jerez, Spain.
A lot of whiskys taste good after your 3rd or 4th helping, but this one is smooth from the initial pour to last call.
This highly-exclusive batch is a love song to The Macallan’s exceptional oak casks and how they are able to transform the rich, fruity, and full whisky into a single malt of greater character, and elegance. Each cask is created from a combination of three different woods; a European oak sherry butt, a European oak sherry hogshead, and an American oak sherry butt. This tri-wood approach gives the whisky an incredibly complex flavor and satisfying deep copper color.
Each sip of this whisky yields an impressive experience, allowing tasters to note each ingredient in the complicated spirit. Ginger, Cinnamon, and Citrus truly stand out on first pour, but the dried fruit and wood spice peek through as well. The Macallan 40 opens with spices and quickly approaches you with a hint of dates and figs. As you experience a healthy mouth coat, the whisky finishes with a long, rich, and lingering cinnamon spice aftertaste. Leaving your taste buds fulfilled and fresh.
