Man of Many’s Staff Favourites – 13 August 2022

It’s the little things in life that often bring you the most joy. For the Man of Many team this week, it was staring blankly at the bizarre Louis Theroux/Jason Derulo mash-up and rewatching Tom Cruise as the hirsute Hollywood exec Les Grossman terrorise the Flaming Dragon militant group via voice note for the 8,000th time. Honestly, what an odd timeline we live in. Nevertheless, we’ve been getting back to basics this week, dipping into our online archives to find more cool products to satiate your spending needs. Here’s Man of Many’s Staff Favourites for this week.

2023 Halliday Wine Companion

Nick Hall – Editor-in-Chief

Every year I wait patiently at my front door hoping to see the mailman rock up with a hefty package in his hands. While that sounded a lot more like a porno introduction than I initially intended, it’s an ironically apt description of how excited I get when the Halliday Wine Companion delivery lands on my doorstep. Each year, the lords of wine drop their official list of Australia’s best vinos and this week, the wine bible was finally handed out. For anyone who hasn’t flicked through the pages, the Wine Companion collates reviews, information and more than 5,000 tasting notes on the nation’s leading wineries, wines and grape-growing regions. Originally set up by wine legend James Halliday, the awards and companion have now been passed on to Tyson Stelzer, who has the unenviable job of pulling all the information together. If you are a wine lover like me, I highly recommend checking the Companion out this year and discovering a whole host of amazing wineries you never knew existed.

The North Face Mens Skiing Jacket A-CAD FUTURELIGHT

Scott Purcell – Co-Founder

I just returned from skiing in Queenstown with AirBNB and was lucky enough to try out a new shell ski jacket from The North Face while I was there. The A-CAD Jacket is probably my favourite to date with the aqua blue and dark green colourway, particularly when compared to my previous bright red jacket from Helly Hanson. Being a shell, it was also a lot more breathable and I tend to run pretty hot when I ski, so it was nice to have a lightweight yet super waterproof jacket with their new FUTURELIGHT technology. As with most premium ski jackets, it comes with all the features you’d expect, like internal mesh pockets for your gloves, easy access zippers, a lift-pass packet on the arm (with a hidden goggle wipe), vents under the under-arms and massive chest pockets. The hood also easily fits over a helmet but one thing I loved most about the jacket was that, with it fully zipped up, there was no need for a face or neck-warmer. It kept me the right amount of toasty without overheating.

During the colder months here in Sydney, there’s nothing quite like a cosy night in, and the Penfolds II Cabernet Shiraz 2019 is the perfect companion. For this drop, the South Australian winemaker has added some je ne sais quoi, partnering with Dourthe Bordeaux to create their latest blend. Penfolds II 2019 Cabernet Shiraz is their first Bordeaux Cabernet Sauvignon blended with South Australian Shiraz, resulting in a balanced combination of old and new world winemaking at its finest.

Under the Banner of Heaven True Crime Series

Denise Barnes – Head of Branded Content

Another true crime series, another day – but trust me when I say, this one is so crazy, it’s hard to believe it’s actually based on real-life events. The story is about Morman fundamentalists and the violent consequences of their unrelenting faith. It all starts in the quiet suburb of Salt Lake Valley in Utah with the gruesome murder of Brenda Wright Lafferty and her 15-month-old baby daughter. What makes the series so gripping is that the lead detective himself, played by Andrew Garfield, is a member of the Latter Day Saints and throughout the series, you go on a journey with him as he tries his best to stay true to his religious beliefs all whilst uncovering the dark and questionable origins. It has a phenomenal cast, and if true crime is your thing – this is your next binge watch for sure. Available on Disney+.

Hismile VIO405 Kit

Richie Hall – Video Producer

As someone who loves coffee (and red wine), teeth whitening is something I’ve been meaning to look into for a while. I’m not too keen on having it done at the dentist so the latest release from Hismile comes at the perfect time. Introducing the VIO405 at home Teeth Whitening Kit which utilises new violet light to activate the PAP+ formula like never before. Taking just 10 mins and leaving no sensitivity, it’s already working its magic and restoring my pearly whites to their pearliest.

Henry’s Neutral Bay

Sam Mangioni – Journalist – Entertainment & Culture

Henry’s in Neutral Bay delivers on all fronts – great wine, delicious cocktails and mouth-watering share plates. After hearing multiple rave reviews, I recently made a booking with a mate, unsure whether it could live up to the hype. However, after experiencing the restaurant firsthand, I must admit it exceeded all expectations. Head chef Allan Mikami was born in Brazil to Japanese parents and has created his own version of Nikkei cuisine – an Asian/South American fusion that’s hard to come by in Sydney. Everything we ate hit the spot, but my favourites were the spicy tuna cones with Furikake, ponzu and Caviar, grilled fresco cheese drowned in honey served with grapes, and the Persian spatchcock presented on a bed of saffron rice with almonds. Oh, and the house-made focaccia is an absolute must! Whether you’re a local or visiting the area, Henry’s should be put on the top of your list.

Dometic GO Compact Bamboo Camping Table

Ben McKimm – Journalist – Automotive & Tech

It comes as no real surprise but I’m a big camper. What started as a way to spend some time with my dad more than a decade ago has become a full-blown hobby as I’ve got older. And being a ‘hobby’ it sure ain’t cheap. It’s a seriously slippery slope when you start looking at all the awesome stuff available from Korean brands such as Snow Peak and Helinox – check out one of my favourite Instagram accounts for inspo – but Aussie brands have been lagging behind in the ‘cool’ department until now. Yes, I have a very specific aesthetic I’m going for when camping… laugh at me.

I love the Korean brands mentioned above for their aesthetic, thoughtful function, and build quality, but their price is typically exorbitant. Looking at Dometic’s latest GO range and I was pleasantly surprised to find this awesome bamboo camping table for about half the price of a Snow Peak equivalent. It’s made extremely well with a lightweight bamboo surface and sturdy aluminium legs that fold down to fit compactly in your vehicle for simple transport. Three heights can be chosen and a carry bag can be purchased separately. I’ve always owned Dometic fridges so I trust this table to last as long as my last fridge, that was still kicking 12 years after I bought it! More information about the Dometic GO range can be read in my full article here.

Sony Linkbuds S

Clelia Niyikiza – Branded Content Assistant

When it comes to finding wireless earbuds, I’ve had a difficult time finding the right ones, especially concerning comfort. I was starting to think there was something wrong with the shape of my ears. I’ve tried various brands over the years and have finally found ones I can have in all day, whether it’s a high-intensity workout or just taking a phone call. The Sony Linkbuds S’ lightweight design and natural ambient sound are not just comfortable but work well for me with features such as high-quality sound, noise cancelling technology, and a precise voice pickup making calls easier. The long-lasting battery life and Bluetooth range have also been a game changer, while the set-up and touch sensitivity are also very straightforward! If you prefer to be more hands-free, it is also compatible with Google Assistant and Alexa. I would recommend testing these out just for comfort. It makes such a difference.

Bellboy Melbourne Backpack 18L

John Guanzon – Head of Social

Don’t judge but I’ve been schlepping around the same work backpack since 2016, complete with drink stains, holes in the lining and probably a mouldy fruit at the bottom that I’d forgotten about. So starting a new job this week – joining the legendary team at Man of Many – naturally felt like the perfect time for a long-overdue bag update. After taking a few days to compare my options, I ended up going with the Bellroy Melbourne 18L in black. Now 18L is quite a sizeable capacity and from the outside, you’d be forgiven for doubting it can fit that much due to its sleek and compact appearance. But I was pleasantly surprised to find it was able to comfortably fit my 16” Macbook Pro, all my cables and chargers, a change of clothes plus so much more room to spare. My large water bottle slipped right into the discreet side pocket, too. I was too stunned to speak. The wide-open front access meant no more rummaging for that rogue piece of fruit at the bottom of my bag and the MagSnap top made access an effortless breeze, all while maintaining an overall clean and minimal look.

Sonoma Wool Company Wool Dish Drying Mat with Linen Sleeve

Jacob Osborn – Staff Writer

Without a dishwasher in our home, a trusty dish drying mat can go a very long way. This one from Sonoma Wool Company is bursting with quality and even more optimal than it first appears. Wrapping a base of 100% wool inside a stylish linen sleeve, the product is eco-friendly, long-lasting, highly absorbent, and naturally resistant to things like mould and mildew. Plus, it just looks great inside a modern kitchen decor.

The wool used for each mat is handcrafted in the USA and sourced from family-owned ranches across the country. The linen hails from India, where flax is grown in steady supply. Working together, these timeless and biodegradable “super” fibres eradicate the need for synthetic or plastic alternatives. We’ve already put this thing to use and I can readily say that it dries quickly and fits perfectly next to the sink. I never thought there’d come a day when I’d be relishing the benefits of a dish drying mat, but hey, we all have to grow up sometime.
