We know the suspense is killing you, so let’s just get one thing out of the way: driving an Aston Martin DB11 Volante is freaking awesome. Okay, okay, so you knew that as soon as you saw the words Aston Martin. After all, the British luxury automaker consistently delivers some of the sharpest and most luxurious rides in the world. Why would the DB11 Volante be any sort of exception?
It wouldn’t, is the answer. If anything, the sporty convertible managed to exceed expectations. Not only does it reach an apex of agility, speed, power, and design, but it’s also one of the most fun and responsive cars we’ve ever put to the test. Ours came in the colour of magnetic silver with an obsidian black and ivory leather interior and it was an absolute dream. If only we could afford one in real life…
To bring you up to speed (pun intended), the DB11 Volante represents the latest evolution of Aston Martin’s convertible Sports GT. Powered by a new 4.0-litre twin-turbo 510 PS V8 engine, the car delivers effortless acceleration and efficiency across a slew of terrains. It’s also quite light on its proverbial feet, thanks to an all-new bonded aluminium structure. Pair that with the comfort and design you’d expect from a luxury Aston Martin and you’re truly cruising in style.
Lending the Volante all the more breadth and versatility are its 3-stage powertrain and chassis modes. Pair that with 8-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission, electric power steering, and limited-slip differential with dynamic torque vectoring, and you end up with a palpable tier of control and responsiveness. When going from the bustling city streets out onto the open road, the car literally changed its behaviour at our behest.
In terms of sheer design, the DB11 Volante leaves essentially nothing to be desired. Between its wraparound clamshell bonnet, tight curves, mouthy grill, drop-top roof, and c-shaped taillights, the convertible maximises its sporty appeal at every turn. Driving that theme home are aerodynamic specs like the innovative Curlicue feature and Aston Martin AeroBlade system, which collectively channel the wind to reduce lift and improve stability.
Naturally, the car is as beautiful on the inside and it is on the outside. To slip into the driver’s seat is to find yourself in the lap of luxury. From the duotone leather seats with matching stitching to the carbon fibre trim inlays to the satin silver detailing, the cabin oozes with quality. Upfront is a state-of-the-art 8″ LCD infotainment system, which delivers capacitive switching, rotary control, and crisp resolution. Sealing the deal is a heated steering wheel because who’s going to argue with one of those?
Sydney experienced no shortage of warm and sunny days last week, and so we couldn’t wait to drop the top of this beautiful machine. As you can probably guess, the process couldn’t have been easier. All we did was press a sole button and the fabric roof folded down in a matter of seconds. Soon enough, a mellow midday breeze was blowing through our hair as we took to the shoreline.
Not to sound like we’re geeking out, but the car’s convertible hood really is an impressive feat. Never before had the experience of lowering the roof been as seamless as it was here. Rigorously tested in all sorts of extreme weather conditions, it can lower and raise at speeds of up to 31 mph with a 31 mph headwind. In addition to the aforementioned button, you can also operate it remotely using your key.
When the roof is up, meanwhile, it’s a little hard to see through either the rear window or rear vision mirror. Thankfully, the car comes equipped with front and rear sensors and an amazing camera set-up, which granted us a 360-degree bird’s eye view. Needless to say, remaining aware of our surroundings was never an issue.
That’s not to mention the Volante’s impressive slew of safety features, including adaptive damping, dynamic stability control, electronic brakeforce distribution, emergency brake assist, positive torque control, and so on and so on. What we’re trying to say here is that we never felt remotely unsafe, even when mirror visibility became less than ideal.
Style and sport collide to brilliant effect on the Aston Martin DB11 Volante. Whether we were cruising past skyscrapers or coasting alongside the shoreline, the car felt impeccably responsive. Ultimately, however, it’s just a fun ride. The thrill starts as soon as you lay eyes on this luxurious stunner and keeps going throughout your entire drive. It’s an addictive feeling and one that never really goes away.
With some cars, every time you get behind the wheel feels like the first time—this is one of those cars. Should you have the money to spend, buying an Aston Martin DB11 Volante is easily one way to spend it. Opt for the standard package or go for some upgrades. Either way, you’ll be driving like a king and turning all sorts of heads in the process.
