Tesla will officially unveil a big rig within the next couple of months or so. Yes, you read that right. The automaker has produced an all-electric semi truck concept. Tesla began working on this project in 2016. Initially, the idea of an electric semi was met with a lot of scepticism and some laughs from the trucking industry. And, why wouldn’t they laugh? After all, few electric cars can even get close to 500 km. Who would imagine a semi-truck capable of hauling heavy loads over long distances?
It looks like this truck will have quite a bit more capability than anyone first imagined. Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed the prototype at the New York Auto Show and confirmed that it would be capable of long hauls.
The concept unveiled at the auto show looks to be a class 8 semi truck. It features a modern, sleek exterior design. Noticeably absent are the side view mirrors. Other than these few details, Tesla still hasn’t released much more information about the semi. They are likely waiting for the reveal in September. However, there is some speculation that autonomous driving might be built into the design, which would be game-changing. It is also widely believed that this truck may be partially solar-powered, which would help explain its long-distance capabilities.
Tesla promised that this truck would be pretty amazing. And, with its all-electric powertrain, the Tesla Semi Truck may significantly lower the cost of operating semi trucks. This fact alone is enough to transform the trucking industry. We’ll be anxiously waiting for September for more news of Tesla’s game-changing semi truck.
