NASA has long been a household name, but recently it has seen a resurgence in popularity, enough so that Casio has taken note and released a limited edition G-Shock DW5600 with the NASA logo emblazoned on it.

One of the first things you’ll notice about the limited edition G-Shock is the NASA “worm” logo. Back in the early 1970s, the US government was looking for ways that the arts might help move the image and interests of federal agencies forward. In answer to a request for proposal from the newly formed Federal Graphics Improvement Program, New York-based Danne & Blackburn created the iconic logo. In response to their submission, which led to the formation of NASA’s graphics standards manual, NASA administrator Richard H. Truly said, “I think the new logotype is pleasing to the eye and gives a feeling of unity, technological precision, thrust and orientation toward the future. Unity, technology, pioneering achievement—that’s what NASA is all about.” The same description neatly fits the NASA G-Shock.

The NASA G-Shock is all white—with the obvious exception of the NASA logo—which gives it a striking resemblance to the suits the NASA astronauts wear. The DW5600 measures 48.9 x 42.8 x 13.4 mm. It is shock-resistant and has water resistance up to 200 meters. The analog face has electroluminescent backlight afterglow for those missions in the dark depths of space, or wherever you might find yourself. When the luminescence is activated, there’s also an image of the moon that appears behind the numbers. Alarms and hourly time signals flash with the buzzer. The watch also has a 1/100 second stopwatch and a countdown timer.

Casio was offering the limited edition NASA DW5600 for USD$130. Even though they limited the sale of the watch to one per household, it still sold out. Given its performance and NASA’s continued popularity, it won’t be surprising to see this watch become available for a second mission.
