  • IWC has unveiled the Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 Year of the Goat (ref. IW388310), limited to 500 pieces and priced at AUD$20,600.
  • The titanium chronograph swaps the burgundy dials from previous Lunar New Year editions for a gold-coloured dial with contrasting black subdials.
  • A gold-plated rotor depicts three goats, while the date display replaces the numeral eight with the Chinese character for goat on the eighth day of each month.

Tigers and dragons and snakes, oh my! IWC has given plenty of Chinese zodiac animals their turn on the back of a watch to ring in the Lunar New Year. But with the Year of the Horse galloping towards the end, it’s time for the goat. And while it might not sound like the most exciting animal in the zodiac (I would know; I’m the Year of the Pig), IWC has made something surprisingly spectacular. Some might even call it the GOAT.

The Swiss watchmaker has unveiled the Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 Year of the Goat, a limited-edition titanium chronograph celebrating the Lunar New Year beginning on 6 February 2027. Coming in at AUD$20,600 and limited to 500 pieces, it’s a striking departure from IWC’s previous zodiac-themed releases, featuring a gold-coloured dial, black subdials and a matching black ceramic tachymeter bezel.

Previous editions have featured everything from a leaping tiger to a mythical dragon and prancing horses, usually paired with IWC’s familiar burgundy dial. This time, the brand has gone for something warmer for the woolly mountain mammal, and I’d wager that championing this gold-and-black colour scheme will turn more than a few heads in China. But the real surprise is waiting around back.

Going For Gold

IWC has made gold the centrepiece of this year’s Lunar New Year edition, and for good reason. In Chinese culture, the colour is associated with fortune, prosperity and prestige, making it a fitting choice for a watch that celebrates the start of a new year.

The gold-coloured dial features three contrasting black chronograph subdials, gold-plated hands and IWC’s familiar vertical chronograph layout. It’s certainly a more striking combination than the burgundy dials we’ve seen on previous Chinese New Year editions, particularly against the brushed titanium case and black ceramic bezel.

At 41 mm in diameter and 14.8 mm thick, the watch retains the proportions of IWC’s existing Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41. The black calfskin strap uses the brand’s EasX-CHANGE system, so you can swap it out tool-free.

Underneath, IWC has equipped the watch with its manufacture calibre 69385, an automatic chronograph movement offering a 46-hour power reserve. It also features a day-and-date display at 3 o’clock and 100 metres of water resistance.

Three Goats Are Better Than One

The real Lunar New Year details are round back. Looking through the sapphire caseback, you’ll see a gold-plated oscillating weight depicting three goats against a mountainous backdrop. The three goats are also a traditional Chinese symbol of good fortune and the beginning of a new cycle.

There’s another little detail hiding in the date window. On the eighth day of every month, IWC replaces the numeral eight with the Chinese character for goat. It’s a subtle touch, particularly given the significance of the number eight in Chinese culture, where it’s associated with prosperity and good fortune.

For Lunar New Year watches, IWC balances symbolism with a design that avoids the obvious festive colours. The gold dial is undoubtedly the star, but it’s those smaller details that give the edition its character. And while the tiger might still win the popularity contest, with this dial and three golden goats winding it up against the mountains, IWC’s latest Lunar New Year watch makes a pretty convincing case for being the GOAT.
