  • The 2027 BMW iX4 is an all-electric sports utility vehicle coupe.
  • Sixth-generation eDrive technology delivers up to 828 kilometres of WLTP range.
  • The 50 xDrive dual-motor powertrain produces 469 HP (345 kW).
  • An 800V architecture enables ultra-fast 400 kW DC charging speeds.
  • Australian pricing starts from AUD$103,900 ahead of Q1 2027 deliveries.

Continuing the rapid expansion of its Neue Klasse product line, BMW has officially revealed the first-ever iX4. This all-electric sports utility vehicle adopts a coupe silhouette and launches with an 800-volt electrical architecture. The flagship 50 xDrive variant features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 469 HP (345 kW) and 645 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds.

The push into the luxury electric SUV segment places the iX4 in direct competition with the Porsche Macan Electric and the Polestar 4. To compete at this tier, BMW engineered the iX4 50 xDrive with a 108.7 kWh battery capable of delivering up to 828 kilometres of WLTP driving range. For context, the entry-level Porsche Macan Electric produces 360 HP (265 kW) and offers up to 654 kilometres of range, while the dual-motor Polestar 4 produces 544 HP (400 kW) and offers up to 600 kilometres of range. For Australian buyers, the iX4 significantly undercuts its German rival with a starting price of AUD$103,900 before on-road costs.

Engineering highlights include a drag coefficient of 0.23 Cd, a standard panoramic sunroof with climate comfort glazing, and the brand-new Heart of Joy high-performance computer that controls all driving dynamics. Inside, the cabin introduces the BMW Panoramic iDrive anchored by a 17.9-inch central display. Let’s take a closer look at the vehicle specifications.

Powertrain, Performance and Architecture

Underpinning the new iX4 is the sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology. The 800-volt architecture and newly developed cylindrical battery cells deliver a 30 per cent improvement in range and charging speed compared to previous generation vehicles.

The 50 xDrive variant pairs a 108.7 kWh battery with dual electric motors to produce 469 HP (345 kW) and 645 Nm of torque, yielding a 0-100 km/h time of 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 210 km/h. When connected to a 400 kW DC fast charger, the system can add 387 kilometres of range in 10 minutes and complete a 10 to 80 per cent charge in 21 minutes.

The entry level 40 xDrive model utilises an 82.6 kWh battery and dual motors to generate 374 HP (275 kW) and 520 Nm of torque. It accelerates to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, offers up to 638 kilometres of WLTP range, and supports 300 kW DC fast charging.

At the core of the driving experience is the Heart of Joy high-performance computer. This system integrates the control of the drive system, braking, recuperation, and steering. Operating up to ten times faster than previous configurations, the computer enables highly effective energy recuperation, allowing up to 98 per cent of everyday braking to be achieved without using the friction brakes.

Exterior Design and Interior Packaging

The iX4 represents the third model in the Neue Klasse family, introducing the next-generation design language to the SUV coupe segment. Exterior proportions are defined by a long 2,897 mm wheelbase, short overhangs, and a flowing roofline. The front fascia merges the BMW kidney grille and twin headlights into a single geometric graphic. We reckon it looks pretty good, but opinions online have certainly been split.

The M Sport package is fitted as standard across the range, bringing 20-inch M light-alloy wheels, M Sport brakes with blue callipers, and model-specific exterior appointments. The body achieves a drag coefficient of 0.23 Cd to maximise aerodynamic efficiency.

Inside the cabin, the iX4 debuts BMW Panoramic iDrive operating on BMW Operating System X. The system integrates a 17.9-inch central display, an optional 3D Head-Up Display, and a new multifunction sports steering wheel with illuminated shy-tech controls. The BMW Panoramic Vision system projects essential driving information across the lower section of the windscreen.

The dedicated electric vehicle architecture yields 490 litres of luggage capacity, which expands to 1,600 litres with the rear seats folded. An additional 58 litres of storage is available beneath the bonnet. The iX4 will be manufactured at BMW Group Plant Debrecen in Hungary using electricity sourced exclusively from renewable energy.
