- Montegrappa and Lamborghini have unveiled a limited-edition fountain pen celebrating 60 years of the Miura, complete with a retractable rock-crystal headlight in its cap.
- The pen borrows several design details from the legendary supercar, including its slatted engine cover, and features an 18K gold nib engraved with the Lamborghini shield.
- Priced at €8,250 (roughly AUD $13,300), the fountain pen comes in three colours, with 60 examples of each, alongside three matching rollerball editions.
Did Lamborghini invent the pop-up headlight? No. Did they tap Montegrappa on the shoulder to add a pop-up headlight to a fountain pen to celebrate the Miura’s 60th anniversary? They sure did. And while the miniature headlight won’t illuminate your notebook, for about AUD $13,300, you can watch it pop out of the cap at the press of a button, just like the ones on the car that inspired it.
Unveiled at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show, the Lamborghini Miura helped lay the blueprint for the modern supercar. With a transversely mounted V12 engine behind the cockpit and a body designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone, it was quite the departure from the front-engined grand tourers of its day. But the Miura is just as memorable for its looks, particularly those pop-up headlights surrounded by distinctive black ‘eyelashes’.
Sixty years later, Italian penmaker Montegrappa has collaborated with The Raging Bull to turn some of those iconic details into an elaborate writing instrument. The Automobili Lamborghini Miura collection comes in Black, Giallo Fly yellow, and Verde Miura green, with both fountain-pen and rollerball versions available. But if you’re hoping to grab one for your pencil case, you’ll need to be quick, as there are only 60 of each version in each colour, for a total of 360 pens.
1/6A Lamborghini Miura Headlight You Can Click
There’s something wonderfully unnecessary about engineering a retractable headlight for a fountain pen. But unlike the original Miura headlights, which had the rather important job of illuminating the road ahead, this one exists purely for the aesthetics.
The miniature headlight sits atop the cap, crafted from rock crystal and mounted on an engraved base that recreates the lamp’s original texture. A push-button mechanism raises it from its housing, mimicking the movement of the Miura’s famous pop-up units. So, depending on how fidgety you are, you can click it open and shut all day long.
It’s undoubtedly the star of the show, but the rest of the pen features even more iconic Miura design elements faithfully recreated by Montegrappa.
The end cap takes inspiration from the ‘Venetian’ grille covering the car’s V12 engine, while the clip and cap band feature slatted detailing that carries the same idea through the body, which also features the Lamborghini shield.
1/9What Does a $13,300 Fountain Pen Get You?
When you’re done admiring the craftsmanship, it’s time to actually write with this thing. At this price, though, you’d certainly hope Montegrappa hasn’t forgotten its purpose.
The fountain pen features an 18K gold nib with a dark ruthenium-plated finish and the Lamborghini shield engraved into its surface. It uses a conventional cartridge-or-converter filling system and includes two ink cartridges and a converter. An 18K gold nib is certainly a good place to start, although I suspect that’s not what most buyers are paying $13,300 for. It’s not quite as exotic as a transversely mounted V12. Much easier to maintain, though.
That being said, this is a substantial pen. The body combines aluminium and stainless steel, measures 161 mm long and 20 mm across, and weighs 87 grams. For comparison, I’ve been writing with a standard Tactile Turn bolt-action pen ever since they were released. Made from stainless steel, these pens weigh about 54 grams. The Miura adds another 33 grams, so I’m curious how comfortable it is to write with. Although I suspect anyone spending this much will be just as interested in looking at it as in writing with it.

So is it worth roughly AUD $13,300? That depends on how much you like fountain pens and classic Lambos. It’s an extraordinary amount of money for something like this. And while I’ve never been partial to fountain pens, I have to give Montegrappa some credit. Rather than dress up an ordinary model in Lamborghini colours and charge a fortune for the privilege, it’s created something genuinely peculiar that pays attention to the details that made the Miura special in the first place.
