‘Hogwarts Legacy’ Casts Spell Over Gamers, Selling 12 Million Copies in Just 2 Weeks
Hogwarts Legacy has been a massive hit across the globe and, if recent sales updates are anything to go by, could become one of the best-selling games in recent years. With the brand new Harry Potter inspired video game adventure gives players the chance to create and fully customise a witch/wizard, fly around on a broomstick and learn spell upon spell, all of which can be used throughout the exciting and innovative combat system.

And while Hogwarts Legacy has been a massive success on streaming services such as Twitch, the popularity of the game is also translating into sales and revenue. As first reported by Variety, Hogwarts Legacy has officially sold over 12 million copies in 2 weeks, with the game bringing in a revenue of 850 million in that time.
Warner Bros. Games President David Haddad said, “We are so thrilled and proud to see the player response to Hogwarts Legacy from gamers, fans who are new to gaming and reviewers around the world.” Haddad then added, “our development team at Avalanche delivered an amazing, high-quality Wizarding World experience that truly fulfils the fan fantasy of life at Hogwarts and our publishing teams have executed a globally impactful launch campaign.”
For comparison, the 2022 Game of the year Elden Ring just recently cracked 20 million sales in just under a year. And with Hogwarts Legacy’s popularity and sales showing no signs of slowing down, chances are the game will reach similar numbers, and even surpass 20 million copies, sooner rather than later.
Despite this overwhelmingly positive response from many, the release of Hogwarts Legacy has still found itself at the centre of major controversy, with members of the LGBTQ+ community as well as transgender advocates calling on players to boycott the game. This response is due to accusations and dialogue surrounding Harry Potter author J.K Rowling and the transphobic comments she has made publicly. However, the game devs have confirmed that Rowling had no role in the creative process of Hogwarts Legacy.

Rather than focusing on the character created by Rowling, Hogwarts Legacy winds the clock back to the 1800s. Players take control of a fifth-year Hogwarts student. The game allows you to attend classes such as Defence Against the Dark Arts and Potions, learning spells and skills that can then be used when exploring the vast and beautiful open world.
As well as getting to fully immerse yourself as a Hogwarts student, there is a dark and ancient mystery at the centre of the game, one that the player and the game’s supporting characters must help uncover and help either destroy or embrace. Hogwarts Legacy is currently available for purchase on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X and PC.
