Hamilton Launches Otherworldly New Watches Inspired by ‘Dune: Part Two’

The worlds of horology and cinema have much in common. Both require the highest levels of vision, skill, and passion to reach the pinnacle of their craft, and both create works of art that intrigue, astound, and inspire us. They have a natural affinity for one another, but there’s one watch brand filmmakers love above all others: Hamilton.

With timepieces that have featured in over 500 films throughout the past 90 years, Hamilton has made an indelible mark on the world of cinema, working with some of the most wildly successful film studios in three ways. The first of these is by providing watches from the brand’s current collection, as it did recently with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The second is by sourcing vintage timepieces from the archives, as was the case with 2023’s cinematic phenomenon Oppenheimer. And the third is by designing a specific prop for a movie, as was done for 2014’s Interstellar and—most excitingly—will be the case again for director Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, the upcoming sequel to his landmark first instalment from 2021.

At the director’s request, Hamilton worked hand in hand with Dune: Part Two’s prop master, Doug Harlocker, to create a device for another world. This necessitated a complete rethink of traditional watch norms, with an approach guided by the lore of Frank Herbert’s Dune novel and Villeneuve’s vision for the film.

“This collaboration was very inspiring and challenging at once,” explains Hamilton CEO Vivian Stauffer. “For the first time we were asked to design something which is not a watch. Getting this trust is very rewarding.”

Intended to be worn in-film by tough-as-nails inhabitants of the desert planet Arrakis—known as the Fremen—the “Desert Watch” is a hardwearing embodiment of Harlocker’s artistry, the design of which received Villeneuve’s blessing before it was donned by Javier Bardem’s Stilgar and his band of desert dwellers. 

Despite the Desert Watch remaining exclusive to the surface of Arrakis, its design was so striking that Hamilton felt compelled to launch a pair of limited-edition timepieces in celebration of the release of Dune: Part Two. As Stauffer outlines, “When we saw the final wrist device, we knew that we must bring it to life by creating a Hamilton timepiece that is inspired by the Desert Watch.”

Called the Hamilton Ventura XXL Bright Dune Limited Edition and the Hamilton Ventura Edge Dune Limited Edition, both watches feature a luminous blue dial, drawing inspiration from the striking blue eyes that are a signature trait of the Fremen. 

The Ventura Bright takes this inspiration further than its sibling timepiece by including a button that replicates the glowing blue lines of the Desert Watch’s dial design, while the Ventura Edge features a matte black PVD-coated angular case paired with a digital display in blue that nods to the relief elements as seen on its in-film inspiration. Plus, each limited-edition timepiece comes with commemorative packaging inspired by Dune: Part Two’s stunning production design.
