Grand Seiko’s $118K ‘Masterpiece’ Shines Like the Night Sky

Enjoying the night sky isn’t what it used to be with all the light pollution blocking out the stars. But there are still a few places where you can go to take in the full splendour of the celestial show. One such place is high up in the mountains of Japan’s Shinshu region. Achi, a village in the southern part of the island nation, is known for its spectacular night skies, and has been the inspiration for many works of art. The most recent masterpiece comes from watchmaker Seiko. The Grand Seiko Masterpiece Collection brings the star-speckled night sky to your wrist with all the majesty of the heavens in tow.

Grand seiko masterpiece collection 1

Not only does the new Grand Seiko Masterpiece Collection celebrate the stars, it also marks the 140th anniversary of Grand Seiko’s founding. The watch adds to the Spring Drive collection, and features the collection’s caliber (the hand-wound SBGZ007), which is made by the masters of the Micro Artist Studio in Grand Seiko’s Shiojiri manufacturing facility. The dial is created using a special manufacturing and finishing technique that makes it look different from every angle, much like the starry sky above.

Surrounding the dial is a Platinum 950 case that has been hand-engraved with a pattern suggestive of the night sky as well. The case measures 38.5mm and is only 9.8mm deep. White gold was used for the hour and minute hands as well as the hour markers. The other markings, including the Grand Seiko name, are etched into the dial. Covering it all is a sapphire crystal with a high dome.

The watch comes on a dark blue crocodile strap and closes with a folding buckle made of 950 platinum. Flip the watch over and you’ll be able to see the movement, which is just as stunning as the dial. Each piece is carefully created and extra thought was put into the little elements that make this watch stand out even more.

The Grand Seiko Masterpiece Collection SBGZ007 Spring Drive will be limited to just 50 pieces and is set to be available in August, 2021. The watch is priced at EUR 80,000 (AUD$118,000)
