Shinola is based out of Detroit, where American automotive muscle was made as well. That shared origin story has brought about the inspiration for the new Shinola Canfield Speedway. “The watch is about the colourful and courageous origins of American stock car racing—like when Daytona Beach actually happened on the beach,” says Shinola.

Much like the cars that inspired it, the Shinola Canfield Speedway comes with a powerful engine—a SW510 automatic movement with 27 jewels and a 48-hour power reserve. The movement is housed in a 45mm stainless steel case with a coin edge. The watch is water resistant up to 10 ATM. The full exhibition case back grants you a peek at the inner workings of the watch. The watch features a checkered flag rotor on the movement and comes in a stock car inspired colorway.
A 20mm perforated black Italian leather strap with a classic quick release buckle keeps the watch on your wrist. The Canfield Speedway is also the first watch from Shinola to have a tachymeter chronograph, as well as being the first chronograph with an automatic movement. Such being the case, it’s no surprise that this is the most complicated and technical watch that Shinola has created.
“What it takes to make a mechanical automatic chronograph watch is more than just a look,” says Stefan M., a Shinola Watch Technician. “This watch is mechanics and physics combined with math and technology. It is made from design creativity and the craftsmanship of skilled people performing the very fine adjustments and finishing of such a complicated machine.”
It’s not going to be easy to get your hands on a Shinola Canfield Speedway. The watch is already cold out on Shinola’s website, though some retailers may still have one. If you do find one, you’ll be spending USD$2,995 to get it. Along with the watch, you’ll also get a custom metal toolbox inspired by the mechanics that made stock car racing possible. The box has an engravable badge and comes with an included booklet.
