Want to please the whisky lover in your life this holiday season? Then put a bottle of The Macallan Edition No.4 under his or her Christmas tree. Of course, if you happen to be a fan of great Scotch yourself, no one would blame you for holding onto that very same bottle. Indeed, the fourth release in the brand’s innovative Edition Series is being hailed as the best one yet. Whereas previous releases highlighted aspects of aging and character, this one shines a spotlight on the whisky’s complex structure, while simultaneously honouring the launch of The Macallan’s new Speyside distillery. In other words, this one’s a celebration of structure in every conceivable sense of the word.
Aged in a mix of handpicked European and American oak casks, The Macallan Edition No.4 comes in firing on all cylinders. Fans of the label will definitely find familiar waves of creamy sherry, but those notes are joined by new dimensions of flavour and character alike. Thanks to European oak sherry-seasoned casks from Tevasa, the whisky delivers base layers of oak, spice, root ginger, and dried fruit. Additional use of European oak sherry-seasoned casks from Jose y Miguel Martin and Diego Martin Rosado puts figs and dates on the palette. Providing balance and more depth are sumptuous notes of vanilla, toffee, and butterscotch, courtesy of American oak sherry-seasoned casks from Vasyma. As if all that wasn’t enough, refill sherry-season oak casks round everything out with splashes of citrus fruit. ABV, meanwhile, is a healthy 48.4%.
The Macallan Master Distiller Nick Savage is the man behind it all. In regards to this limited edition stunner, he said the following: “Edition No.4 is a celebration of The Macallan’s whisky making heritage as we enter an exciting new era, marking the coming together of our history and new horizons in the creation of two structural masterpieces: a remarkable whisky and a magnificent new distillery…This is a truly spectacular single malt, delivering a rounded honey and sweet toffee aroma and an intense burst of nutmeg with wood spices on the palate. A powerful and invigorating mouth feel, as if standing on top of the new distillery roof in the Speyside breeze. A combination of carefully selected sherry-seasoned oak casks brings out unique refreshing qualities and delivers an unforgettable whisky experience.”
