There’s a Volcanic Wine Dinner Coming to Sydney This Week

Like whisky, building your wine palate is all about experimentation, trial, and error. And while seasoned wine enthusiasts can pick a Mount Etna Mascalese from a Canary Island Listán Negro, there’s always an opportunity to build your knowledge over dinner with a great sommelier. You could head to one of the best wine bars in Sydney, but we don’t think anything beats an intimate hosted event like the upcoming multi-course wine dinner: Exploring Volcanic Terroirs at ESQ in Sydney.

These folks know their wine, and they’re firing on all cylinders on April 10th, 2024. Host Luigi Celiento (Trippas White Group) will guide you through the distinctive terroir and flavours from the volcanic wine regions. Pricing starts at $195 for the Early Bird rate while the Final Release is priced at $220. Tickets are available right now.

Dinner will be split into two flights: White and red. However, the night will start with a Sydney rock oyster, sherry vinaigrette, shallot, and wakame oil that’s paired with one of Australia’s great sparkling wines – Swift Vintage 2013 – Brut Chardonnay, Pinot Noir from Orange, NSW.

For the white wine flight expect Kingfish ceviche with coconut cream, namjim, garlic chips, and micro coriander before a larger serving of Linguine alle vongole with water cress. These will be paired with a selection of wines that includes: 2021 Szepsy ‘Madi’ Furmint Tokaj, Hungary, 2021 Les Iles Blanc ‘Cyclades’ Assyrtiko, Monemvasia Greece, and 2021 Le Battistelle ‘ Roccolo del Duorlo’ Garganega, Soave Classico, Veneto, Italy.

Red wine flights will be paired with Chicken supreme with mushroom volute, charred bitter lettuce, chervil and Pork neck roulade, red wine jus, parsnip puree, and confit onion before some of our personal ‘most anticipated’ wines:

  • 2021 Girolamo Russo ‘ A Rina’ Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Mount Etna, Sicily – Italy
  • 2020 Suertes del Marqués ‘ 7 Fuentes’ Listán Negro, Tintilia Canary Island, Spain
  • 2018 Antonio Caggiano ‘Vigna Macchia dei Goti’ Aglianico, Taurasi, Campania – Italy

You don’t have to know anything about wine, but you should know that these are exciting bottles. Finally, a delicious dessert with Henriques & Henriques ‘Finest Medium Rich 5YO’ Tinta Negra Mole blend Madeira that’s matched with a Valrhona white chocolate mousse, pistachio ice-cream& blood orange granita, rhubarb, and crispy meringue. It sounds like a night to remember!
