Björn Block, business leader for IKEA Home Smart at IKEA of Sweden, has a vision for IKEA products. “Our goal is for our collective work to save space, get rid of cords, make clutter invisible, and bring sound and music into the home in a more beautiful way.” That goal led to a partnership with Sonos systems to create the new SYMFONISK collection.
The idea for the product line started back in March of 2016, when IKEA started meeting with Sonos about adding to their smart-home products. IKEA knew they had expertise in home furnishings, but they needed help with the acoustic part, and who better to work with than Sonos?
“Stepping into sound and music at home without any knowledge of acoustics and speakers and music, that would not be very wise,” explains Block. “Of course, we are bringing something to that collaborative table. We’re bringing a deep, long, and global knowledge about life at home.”
Together, Sonos and IKEA came up with a AUD$99 bookshelf speaker which can either sit on a bookshelf or be mounted to the wall as a shelf. They also created a lamp that doubles as a speaker, priced at AUD$179. The lamp is essentially a Sonos One in a new shape and with a globe light on top of it.
Both products link with other Sonos gear via WiFi for a whole-home music approach. The Sonos app will also control the speakers, allowing you to stream your favourite services.
