Harley Davidson Electra Glide Highway King is a Chromed Out Cruise Missile

The Icons collection of Harley Davidson special edition motorcycles sums up what this brand is all about and a lot that is nestled within a heavy bout of nostalgia along with some tasteful styling tweaks. It’s all about limited edition Harleys dipped in chrome along with each model being individually numbered and produced only once.

The Electra Glide Highway King is the latest addition to this line-up of special editions and gets decked up in laced wheels, wide-whitewall tires, a two-tone windshield, solo suspension seat amongst other classic Harley Davidson styling cues. The 1968 FLH Electra Glide served as the inspiration for this bike and incorporated the Swingin’ 60s vibe into their popular tourer. Let’s check it out.

“In its day this was a really deluxe motorcycle,” said Brad Richards, Harley-Davidson Vice President of Design and Creative Director. “The colours we’ve selected for the Highway King model are reminiscent of the original colour options offered in 1968. We carefully matched each colour in the lower section of the windshield. In 1968, the accessory fibreglass saddlebags were only offered in white, so we’ve done the same in 2023. The result is a thoroughly modern motorcycle that looks unapologetically old school.”

The Highway King model will be offered in two colour options: Hi-Fi Orange (limited to 1,000 produced) and Hi-Fi Magenta (limited to 750 produced). The Australian market will only get the Hi-Fi Orange colour option though.

Attention to detail is the ethos here and even the Hard-shell saddlebags are finished in Birch White, while a Black Denim panel on the fuel tank is separated from the primary colour with a Birch White accent stripe. The tank badge is also very similar to the one used in 1968. Elsewhere, an Icons Motorcycle Collection graphic and serialisation badge is laser-etched into the console insert.

There is a detachable windshield that features a tinted lower section colour-matched to the paint colour. A solo saddle with a black-and-white cover and a chrome rail, mounted over an adjustable coil spring and shock absorber, is another nod to the Harley-Davidson FL models from the 1960s. Of course, you can’t miss those gorgeous Chrome steel-laced wheels and wide whitewall tires which adds to the nostalgic look, as do the chrome front fender rails and saddlebag rails, front fender skirt, and ventilator air cleaner cover. An Electra Glide script is placed on each side of the front fender.

As far as the powertrain goes, there is no faulting the Milwaukee-Eight 114 V-Twin engine while Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle Stage Upgrade kits are also there for those who want even more performance. Brembo brakes, electronic cruise control and a whole host of safety features like the Cornering Enhanced Traction Control System and Cornering Drag-torque Slip Control System make for a comfortable long ride. Overall, the Electra Glide Highway King is probably the most desirable motorcycle in the Icons Collection.
