  • Sony has unveiled the Prism Collection, bringing back transparent DualSense wireless controller designs alongside matching PS5 console covers.
  • Flare Orange, Emerald Green and Graphite Gray feature glossy, see-through finishes inspired by late-1990s gaming hardware.
  • In Australia, the controllers will set you back AUD $134.95, while the console covers will cost AUD $119.95, with pre-orders opening on 10 November ahead of a February 2027 launch.

Looks like dbrand has some competition. The company that brought translucent Retro Darkplates to the PS5 in 2023 now has Sony returning to the see-through party. PlayStation has unveiled the Prism Collection, a trio of transparent finishes for its DualSense wireless controllers with matching PS5 console covers. For all of us who grew up with a see-through Nintendo 64 or a translucent Game Boy Color, you already know why you’re pre-ordering on 10 November.

You can choose from three designs: Flare Orange, Emerald Green and Graphite Gray, each with a high-gloss finish that lets you peer beneath the controller’s outer shell. Sony also gave the centre section a metallic finish, so the translucent plastic doesn’t look like someone forgot to finalise the assembly before shipping the controllers. As for those matching console covers, they bring the same trio of colours to the PS5.

For Aussies looking to take their PlayStation to a 90s-themed party, you’ll pay AUD $134.95 for a Prism DualSense controller and another AUD $119.95 for the covers. Pre-orders open at 10 am local time on 10 November 2026, ahead of the official rollout beginning 4 February 2027. It’s a long wait. With covers sold in limited quantities through select retailers and availability varying by region, you’ll want to act fast to snag a set of matching Prism console covers.

Sony Brings Back the See-Through ’90s

“We know how much our fans have been looking forward to the return of transparent controllers,” says Sony design-team member Leo Cardoso, who wanted to revisit the late-’90s see-through trend without abandoning the PS5’s existing design.

And while dbrand might have beaten Sony to the punch with transparent PS5 covers, PlayStation is no stranger to see-through hardware. Back in 2002, Sony released translucent Ocean Blue and Zen Black PS2 consoles in Japan, complete with matching DualShock 2 controllers. Part of the limited-edition 2002 Color Series, the consoles offered a look beneath the plastic shell long before anyone was swapping covers on a PS5.

Fast forward to 2016, and the Crystal DualShock 4 brought the transparent look to the PS4. Then, in 2017, Sony expanded the Crystal range with Blue Crystal and Red Crystal controllers. Three translucent finishes showing off the technology underneath. Sound familiar?

More recently, Sony’s 2024 Chroma Collection experimented with iridescent colours, while this year’s Hyperpop Collection added a hint of transparency to its console covers.

The Prism Collection puts that see-through look front and centre again. And with a matching DualSense to go with the console covers, dbrand has some competition from a company that knows a thing or two about transparent controllers.
