Papa Gede’s New Orleans-Style Muffuletta

Full disclosure, I had no idea what a Muffuletta was before this week, but I’m so glad that I do now. The round Sicilian-inspired sandwich first gained popularity amongst immigrants in New Orleans in the mid-20th century and now it’s finally made its way Down Under. On Friday, Papa Gede’s co-owner Lara hand-delivered the largest, heaviest and most ridiculous sandwich I have ever laid eyes on. A seemingly-endless feast of cold-cut meat, cheese, olive salad and of course, exquisite bread made for the perfect way to close out the work week and undo all of my hard work in the gym. And, like Michael Scott himself, I am ready to get hurt again. No doubt you’ll find me at Papa Gede’s New Orleans-style cocktail & absinth bar down the Kent St CBD laneway sometime this week, eagerly awaiting round two.

Hyatt Centric Melbourne

I stayed as a guest of Hyatt Centric for one night on a recent trip down to Melbourne. After a delayed flight getting in from Sydney I was keen to jump in the pool and get some laps in. I had the striking 25m indoor pool all to myself (pictured). Whilst Melbourne is certainly not short on hotel options the Hyatt Centric is a very welcome new addition. You’ll find it conveniently located next to Southern Cross station, Marvel Stadium and Southbank. It features 277 chic rooms, an upscale restaurant and a 25th floor bar with a winning view. The rooms are well appointed and very competitively priced. Waking up refreshed the next morning I headed down to the fitness centre. A few other guests had the same idea but the gym is large enough to comfortably handle a crowd. Hyatt Centric will definitely be on my radar next time I’m looking for a stay in the heart of Melbourne.

Quintaliza Coffee-Aged Reposado Tequila

Additive-free and certified organic, this 100% Blue Weber Agave tequila reposado is even more than first meets the eyes (and lips). Every batch is aged by way of a proprietary process and then finished in oak barrels that previously held artisan-roasted organic coffee, making it the world’s first and only coffee-aged tequila. From this unique methodology comes a spirit of distinctive colour and depth, which rounds out its classic flavour profile of black pepper, vanilla, and agave with rich notes of roasted coffee and premium oak.
Quintaliza Reposado represents an impeccable meeting ground between the two artisanal worlds of sustainably-sourced coffee beans and organically grown, high-quality agave. After a three-day natural fermentation and double-distillation inside traditional alembic stills, the spirit is matured in a combination of ex-bourbon barrels and coffee-seasoned barrels to impart one-of-a-kind flavour and complexity. In an extra nod toward sustainability, the old coffee grounds from the barrels are repurposed as fertilizer, increasing the pH level in the agave fields. What ultimately matters is the taste, of course, and on that front this reposado definitely delivers!
