‘Insane and Great’: Adam Sandler Teases Script for Safdie Brothers’ ‘Uncut Gems’ Follow-Up

It’s no secret that Adam Sandler is reuniting with Uncut Gems directors, Josh and Benny Safdie, but the wheels are turning much faster than initially thought. Breaking the news himself, Sandler recently spoke of his next ambitious project with the filmmakers, revealing a taste of the film’s outrageously long script, labelling it ‘insane and great’. Talking to The Hollywood Reporter in January earlier this year, the prolific comedian/actor spilled a few beans surrounding his mysterious project and how he feels to be back working with the Safdie Brothers.

“They’ve been writing this movie we’re supposed to do together for a couple years. They just write hundreds and hundreds of pages. I’ll read them and I’ll say, ‘I like the part when this …’ And they’ll be like, ‘Oh, that’s not in it anymore. We did a whole other thing. We’re going to send you a new draft.’ They just don’t stop writing and thinking and coming at every angle they can, and this movie we’re going to do is pretty amazing. The first draft of the new one was 340 pages! It was insane and it was great,” expressed Sandler.

While we’re currently light on details, the upcoming film is being described as a loose ‘follow-up to Uncut Gems’. The 2019 film sees Sandler taking on a more serious role than he’s typically known for, starring as Howard Ratner, a jeweller to the stars with a serious gambling addiction. The crime thriller centres around Ratner trying to source a gem in order to repay his enormous debts. Uncut Gems earned Sandler a swathe of praise and appreciation for his stunning performance, further cementing his worth and versatility as an actor.

A Deadline report says that “several sources say (the film) is likely set in the world of high-end card collecting,” with shooting to kick off in Q2 2023, “which would likely make it Sandler’s next project.” This still-to-be-named movie has no release date or synopsis for now and it’s unclear whether Sandler, Josh and Benny have locked down a final script. However, this isn’t the first time we’re hearing Sandler talking about his grand reunion with the Safdie Brothers.

Last year in April, Sandler told Entertainment Weekly about how the brothers are tirelessly working to make the movie happen. He said, “Their work ethic is bananas. They’re always working, always writing, always thinking. I don’t know what I can tell you, but it’s gonna be very exciting. It’s different. But I don’t want them to ever say, ‘What the hell did you tell him that for?’ So I’ll just let them talk (about the movie).”

He further added, “I love these guys, I love ’em. I mean, they’re incredible filmmakers… Of course, I would die to work with them again, because it’s a brand new feeling. But the funniest thing is when I would say to the Safdies, ‘Your future is so bright,’ they didn’t want to talk about that. They were like, ‘I just like Gems, man.’ They just were so deep in it.” Even though it’s early days for the trio’s upcoming project, Sandler’s recent comments seem to hint that the wheels for some sort of an Uncut Gems follow-up are in motion. It will be interesting to see whether the project ever sees the light of day or is scrapped for something totally different.
