According to the creators of the show, Black Mirror season six was designed to “reinvent itself with each new episode”, a tall order for a series that has already revolutionised the way modern sci-fi is distributed. The 2018 spinoff film Bandersnatchtook viewers on an interactive ride that saw them control the storyline as it progressed.

For the sixth season, Black Mirror didn’t returning to viewer-led entertainment, however, the initial episode descriptions do paint the same portrait of bleak realism that fans have come to love.

Black Mirror season six was the first to be produced by Brooker and Jones’ new production company Broke & Bones and rejigged the formula, adding a whole new twist. During the official unveiling of Black Mirror season six, series creator Brooker revealed that he “stretched the parameters” of what viewers can anticipate from an episode of Black Mirror in the forthcoming season.

“I’ve always felt that Black Mirror should feature stories that are entirely distinct from one another, and keep surprising people (and myself) or else what’s the point?” Brooker said. “It should be a series that can’t be easily defined, and can keep reinventing itself. So partly as a challenge, and partly to keep things fresh for both me and the viewer, I began this season by deliberately upending some of my own core assumptions about what to expect. He even promises some “crazy swings and more variety than ever before.”
