First Full-Length ‘Extraction 2’ Trailer is 2.5 Minutes of Sheer Brutality

The first full-length trailer for the upcoming Netflix action blockbuster Extraction 2has finally dropped and it’s not for the faint of heart. Debuting overnight, the new Extraction 2 trailer sees Aussie superstar Chris Hemsworth back in the box seat, reviving his much-loved mercenary character Tyler Rake for the sequel to the 2020 smash hit. An all-out assault, Hemsworth and co have dialled the action up to 11, introducing a swathe of death-defying new stunts that would make John Wick blush.

The new Extraction 2 trailer picks up right where the first film left off, with the former black ops soldier taking on a deadly new mission. This time around, Rake is tasked with rescuing the family of a Georgian gangster from a seedy prison where they are being held captive. Admittedly, it’s a less inventive storyline than its predecessor, but if the trailer is anything to go by, Extraction 2makes up for it in intensity.

Images of star Chris Hemsworth being set alight for certain scenes have already made headlines with the new clip teasing even more danger. A series of long action sequences, including a reported 21-minute ‘one-take’ shot, headline the brutal 150-second teaser before it all comes to a head with a stunning prison riot display.

Somewhat unsurprisingly, however, the clip did stop short of explaining how Rake seemingly returned from the dead after the events of the first film. As over 99 million viewers found out when Extraction was released in 2020, Hemsworth’s lead character doesn’t exactly come out unscathed. Nevertheless, Netflix has revived the hired gun, presumably with the power of ‘sequel-money’ and we’re all the better for it.

The original Extraction film proved to be a runaway success for Netflix, thanks in part to a thoroughly original concept and a dash of good timing. Released at the height of the global pandemic, the movie charted the beleaguered tale of an Australian mercenary struggling to come to terms with the death of his son. When he is roped into rescuing the kidnapped son of an imprisoned drug lord, his inner turmoil reaches boiling point, giving way to a brutal display of power, not to mention Hemsworth’s best performance yet.

“Those early reactions were so positive that they actually changed the ending of the first film,” director Sam Hargraves told Netflix earlier this year. “Originally, Joe Russo and I agreed that an arc of redemption felt right for the character of Tyler Rake and having him sacrifice his life at the end of the movie felt like a fitting end. But when the reactions indicated that this character has legs and people might enjoy another round, we went back in and filmed a new ending.”

“Of course, you never really know how a global audience is going to react,” he added. “So, when the movie dropped in 2020, and the audience responded as positively as they did, we knew we made the right call. The gears started turning about the next story almost immediately.”

Extraction 2 stars Chris Hemsworth, Golshifteh Farahani and Olga Kurylenko, with The Grey Manmasterminds the Russo brothers sharing producer credits alongside a host of Hollywood elites. Additionally, the sequel marks a reunion for Hemsworth and director Sam Hargraves, with Joe Russo penning the script. The Netflix action blockbuster Extraction 2 will officially hit the streaming service on 16 June 2023. Get prepared.
