Best New Series on Amazon Prime Video

This July, Prime Video streams some fan favourites and debuts at least one new series premiere. Here are your highlights.

ROMCON: Who the F**k is Jason Porter

Release Date: 1 July, 2025

This two-part documentary sounds like the stuff of Lifetime movies, except it’s all too real. Toronto real estate broker Heather Rovet thought she found the perfect match in charming handyman “Jace.” Three years into their romance, however, she discovers that Jace is actually a convicted criminal named Jason Porter, who has a history of scamming women. Putting everything on the line, Heather meets with former victims and embarks on a path for justice.

Simple Plan: The Kids in the Crowd

Release Date: 8 July, 2025

This upcoming docuseries is your all-access pass to Canadian pop-punk band Simple Plan. Formed in 1999, the band and its members have experienced epic highs and lows over the course of 25 years. In addition to archival footage, the series goes behind the scenes during their recent World Tour. It also features interviews with big-name peers such as Avril Lavigne, Mark Hoppus (of Blink-182), members of The Offspring, and others.

Suits

Release Date: 17 July, 2025

Originally aired on the USA Network, this legal drama series gained an entirely new following when it streamed on Netflix (becoming one of the most-watched shows of 2023). If you didn’t catch the second wave, now is your chance. Set at a fictional NYC law firm, the story follows ethically dubious attorneys as they advance high-profile cases and their own respective careers.

Shiny Happy People: A Teenage Holy War: Season 2

Release Date: 23 July, 2025

Spoiler alert: Christian organisations aren’t always as pious or ethical as they seem. This investigative docuseries proved as much with its gripping first season, which covered the Duggar family and their ties to the controversial Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP). Season 2 cracks open the lid on Teen Mania, a massive youth ministry that used feel-good music to fill stadiums and recruit participants. Beyond the happy veneer, however, a much darker reality was lying in wait.

Best New Movies on Prime Video

Whether you’re seeking original films or licensed classics, Prime Video has you covered this July. Here’s a closer look at some fresh arrivals.

WARFARE

Release Date: 1 July, 2025

Director Alex Garland teamed up with Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza for this unsparing examination of modern battle. Viewers are plunged into the heart of a surveillance mission, as American Navy SEALS find themselves deep in enemy territory. Striving for authenticity, the film draws upon real-life experiences and thereby delivers less traditional modes of storytelling. This is warfare in its boredom and brutality alike, and you won’t necessarily discover tidy character arcs or sweeping narratives. Aussie Prime Video subscribers can stream it now.

Blue Velvet

Release Date: 1 July, 2025

The death of auteur David Lynch continues to loom so large that you might forget about the sheer insanity of his cinematic visions. Consider Blue Velvet the perfect refresher in its perverse exploration of American suburbia. Upon his return to the small town of Lumberton, college student Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) discovers a severed human ear while passing through a field. Things only get weirder…and weirder…and weirder…from there.

Blade Runner

Release Date: 26 July, 2025

Ridley Scott is another director who’s committed some truly unforgettable images, characters, and ideas to celluloid. Nowhere is that more evident than with this sci-fi masterpiece, in which a futuristic bounty hunter (Harrison Ford) tracks down bio-engineered humanoids known as Replicants. The film exists in various versions, and our advice is to watch either The Director’s Cut or The Final Cut if they’re available. No matter where you land, prepare for a visual feast with the sumptuous music to match.

The Equalizer

Release Date: 29 July, 2025

We love ourselves a vigilante thriller, and this one delivers the goods. Based on an old TV series, it stars Denzel Washington as retired intelligence agent Robert McCall. While quiet and unassuming at first glance, our protagonist is a deadly force of nature when called to duty. That’s bad news for the local Russian mob, who end up in McCall’s crosshairs after beating a young woman (Chloë Grace Moretz). Multiple sequels would follow.
