“Welcome to the future. Life is good but it can be better.”
The first trailer for Wonder Woman 1984 just dropped, marking Warner Bros.’ ninth entry into the DC Comic Extended Universe. Set in the 1980’s, Diana Prince is transported to a decade defined by boofy hairdoo’s, Ghostbusters, and the Cold War. Gal Gadot stars again as the super-heroine, who this time comes into conflict with the Soviet Union during the Cold War and finds a formidable foe by the name of the Cheetah.
The trailer shows a top-shelf superhero – backhanding air-borne bullets into action and all that jazz – but it remains unseen how her electric whip will stack up against ‘Cheetah’. Cheetah is one of Wonder Woman’s OG archnemeses, dating back to WW #6 from 1943. The character will be played by former Saturday Night Live host Kirsten Wiig. She starts as a close friend of Diana’s but the two eventually grow apart and have a good old-fashioned showdown.
Chris Pine’s ‘Steve Trevor’ is present again, though there looks to be no explanation as to how he was resurrected from his fiery demise at the end of the last movie. The film also features The Mandalorian’s Pedro Pascal – he’s described as “the king of infomercials” and can be heard selling a dream to the public throughout the trailer.
Wonder Woman 1984 will hit theatres June 5 2020. Watch the trailer above.
