As far as upcoming movies, Zach Creggar’s upcoming Weapons is probably top of my list for things to be excited by. Creggar’s previous horror flick, Barbarian, was an absolute standout in its field when it released in 2022, and Weapons already looks just as incredible—plus, we don’t have to wait too long, with the movie dropping in Aussie cinemas on 7 August 2025.

But what is Weapons? We’ll dive a bit deeper into that question below, but essentially the movie posits a fascinating mystery. One night, at 2.17 am, all but one child in primary school teacher Mrs. Gandy’s class gets out of bed and disappear into the night. CCTV and security footage found later shows each of the children running through the streets in an identical way, but no one seems to know where they went or why they did it.

The parents of these missing children, and the local police, start to point fingers at Mrs. Gandy (played by Wolf Man‘s Julia Garner), putting the blame on her in an effort to deal with the uncertainty. From there… well, we don’t really know what happens.

Creggar has hinted that this set-up really only reflects the first half of the movie, and barely scratches the surface of what is to come. Having seen Barbarian, I can understand what he means by that. Here, we’re going to break down everything we know about the upcoming horror movie. So strap in, we’re probably in for a hell of a ride.

While we’d only seen brief glimpses of CCTV footage showing the moment 17 kids in Mrs. Gandy’s class decided they’d go for a run in the middle of the night—including a full 2-hour unlisted YouTube video of what appears of be police scrubbing the footage for evidence—we now have a full, theatrical trailer to pour over.

In it, we get to see the basic set up, as well as flashes of some truly disturbing moments we can look forward to. It’s clear some weird shit is going to happen in this town, with people hurting themselves, and others, in some kind of trance. Grady also appears to be having some awful looking nightmares, either burdened by the disappearance of her class, or victim to something more supernatural.

What Do We Know About ‘Weapons’?

“When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.” That’s the official logline from Warner Bros., but as mentioned above, only really reflects the initial concept of the movie.

More specifically, it appears 17 children voluntarily left their homes at 2.17am, and disappeared into the darkness of the night. The children all belonged to Mrs. Grady’s class, and only one child from the class remains.

Why didn’t that kid also leave? Why did the kids all disappear? Where did they go? What does Grady have to do with the disappearance, if anything at all? These are all questions we’re looking forward to having answered, but, importantly, director Zach Creggar recently said that this concept will really only kick of the movie off.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Creggar said Weapons will “fork and change and reinvent and go in new places. It’s doesn’t abandon that question, believe me, but that’s not the whole movie at all. By the midpoint, we’ve moved on to way crazier shit.”

Creggar also noted that the movie is far more ambitious than his previous effort, Barbarian, in almost every way, while also being a “weirder” film. The comparisons to Barbarian aren’t just being made out of convenience, as it appears Weapons is actually set in the same world as the 2022 break-out hit.

A website set up to advertise the film, the faux local newspaper Maybrook News, includes a link to a news story that details the events of Barbarian (without spoiling too much, thankfully), which, assuming the Maybrook News website is an in-universe artefact, hints that the events of both films happen in the same world, and may even happen at similar points in time.

When is ‘Weapons’ Release Date?

As mentioned above, Weapons is launching in Australian cinemas on 7 August 2025. It’s being presented by New Line Cinema, produced by Subconscious, Vertigo Entertainment, and Boulderlight Pictures, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
