SXSW Sydney is not happening. On 14 January 2026, organiser TEG confirmed the festival would not return, after Destination NSW decided against funding it in 2026 or 2027. Three editions, 2023 through 2025, are all the city is going to get.
That draws a line under one of the more ambitious things Sydney has attempted in a decade. SXSW Sydney transplanted the sprawling Austin format to Darling Harbour, running tech, music, screen and gaming programming across a week each October, and it pulled more than 345,000 attendances in its final year. Is SXSW Sydney On in 2026?
No, and it is not on in 2027 either. Destination NSW, the NSW Government’s tourism and events arm, confirmed it would not proceed with the event across both years. There is no rescheduled date, no replacement festival announced under the SXSW banner, and no badge sale to wait for.
The clearest signal is the one you can check yourself. As of 26 August 2026, sxswsydney.com no longer resolves to its own site. It redirects to sxsw.com, the global SXSW homepage, which is what happens when a licensed regional edition is wound up rather than paused.
Why Was SXSW Sydney Cancelled?
Money, and specifically the NSW Government’s decision to stop providing it. Destination NSW secured the rights to bring SXSW to Sydney in a deal reported by the Sydney Morning Herald as worth around $12 million, structured as an initial five-year term with extensions tied to revenue targets. Those extensions did not come. After the 2025 edition, the government reviewed the event and chose not to fund the remaining years.
TEG, which ran the festival under licence from SXSW’s global owner Penske Media Corporation, framed the outcome as a market problem rather than a falling out.
SXSW Sydney worked closely with the NSW Government and SXSW’s global owners, Penske Media Corporation to explore potential pathways forward for the event, however, prevailing market conditions mean the Sydney edition will not be going ahead at this time.

SXSW Sydney has played an important role in showcasing Sydney’s creative and innovation sectors; however the decision has been made to not proceed with the event in 2026 and 2027.

It is understood the call followed the standard performance assessment applied to all major events in the state. No public document has spelled out which measure the festival missed.
What SXSW Sydney Was Supposed to Be
The scale of the retreat only makes sense against the size of the original promise. When Destination NSW announced the deal in July 2022, the headline was that South by Southwest, running in Austin, Texas since 1987, had never staged a full edition anywhere outside North America. Sydney was to be the first, and not as a one-off: SXSW Sydney was designed to become the festival’s permanent Asia-Pacific branch.
Destination NSW promised more than 1,000 sessions, screenings, performances, activations and parties across the city, gathering “the world’s most inspired thinkers, creators and innovators for an agenda-setting exploration of the best in Music, Screen, Gaming, Technology and Innovation”.
SXSW Sydney will showcase the largest group of inspiring international thinkers, creators, innovators and performers ever seen in Sydney at one time. Focusing on the creator industries in the Asia Pacific region, SXSW Sydney will celebrate what’s next in culture, tech and the region’s thriving creative economy.

The Austin pedigree it was trading on is hard to argue with. Past participants include Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Steven Spielberg, Lady Gaga, Prince, Jordan Peele, Taika Waititi, Dave Grohl, Michelle Yeoh, Billie Eilish, Snoop Dogg and Mark Cuban. Locally, the loudest early endorsement came from a director then riding high on Elvis.

By the time the first edition opened on 15 October 2023, attending it was not cheap. A badge carrying premium access started at AUD$1,295, wristbands offering secondary access started at AUD$195, and a single expo day pass started at AUD$40.
What SXSW Sydney Actually Delivered
The figures below come from TEG and the NSW Government rather than an independent audit, so treat them as the organisers’ case rather than a settled verdict. They are still the only numbers on the table.
- Three editions: 15 to 22 October 2023, 14 to 20 October 2024 and 13 to 19 October 2025, centred on Darling Harbour.
- 345,000 attendances in 2025, about 15 per cent up year on year.
- 63,000 out-of-region attendees across the three years.
- 35 per cent growth in international visitation between 2024 and 2025.
- $276 million in claimed economic impact across 2023 to 2025, per TEG.

Will SXSW Sydney Ever Come Back?
Not on any timeline anyone has committed to. It is worth being precise here, because the coverage has blurred two different claims. Destination NSW’s statement rules out 2026 and 2027 specifically. TEG’s language is broader, describing the Sydney edition as concluding its run rather than pausing.
Put together: there is no funding through 2027, no operator currently running the event, and the Sydney web presence has been folded into the global site. A revival after 2027 would need a new funding deal and a new licence, which is a rebuild rather than a restart. Anyone telling you a 2028 date is guessing.
What Is Still On in Sydney
SXSW Sydney occupied a specific slot, a large-scale October event that mixed industry programming with public-facing music and screen. Nothing replaces it at that scale, but the city’s calendar is not empty.
- Vivid Sydney remains the city’s biggest festival by attendance, running light, music and ideas programming across the CBD each winter.
- GABS Craft Beer Festival covers the smaller, more social end of the calendar.
