Sometimes success pivots on having the right opportunity fall into your lap. Now that may not necessarily be the case with KITH, but it no doubt helped that Ronnie Fieg had the chance to partner up with ASICS early in the company’s history. Back in 2007, Fieg came up with a trio of colourful versions of ASICS’ Gel Lyte 3. KITH is returning to that partnership to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Gel Lyte 3 with a project entitled “The Palette.”
For this new collection, Fieg has created a collection of 30 pairs of ASICS that are based on KITH’s signature color palette. Each of the shoes is done in a strategically chosen colour to create a gradient that becomes apparent when you see the whole collection together. Each shoe is made with a suede upper made out of premium pigskin.
The sole unite is done in a contrasting tone. The split tongue features debossed logos of “30” on the left shoe and “Fieg” on the right, (both are written in the ASICS font). The footbeds also feature cobranding. Each colorway of the Palette was released on Black Friday of 2020, with a limited quantity of each one—only 300 per color were made, creating a grand total of just 9,000 pairs of shoes. The shoes are priced at USD$180.
“I worked backwards from it being the 30th anniversary of a very special silhouette this year. It had to be 30 shoes. There was no other way for me to celebrate my history with the Gel Lyte 3,” writes Fieg. “Once I knew that’s what we would do, I started digging in the 9 year archive to find the colors we used most in our designs. I love our palette and I’m happy we’re launching it with this project.”
