With a focus on Italian classics married with a creative spin, Pellegrino 2000 is Sydney’s answer to a modern, Italian garage-style trattoria. The mood is set as soon as you step inside, with decor firmly affirming the Italian inspiration, with framed vintage photographs, packets of pasta and bottles of olive oil adorning the space, which gets even better when you head downstairs to the wine cellar that doubles as a moody dining room. We recommend the rigatoni bolognese, paired with one of the many Italian drops on offer, of course.

We can’t go past the kangaroo mortadella gougere, the lamb dumplings with saltbush, chilli and yoghurt, and the mango Tasmanian saffron sorbet for dessert.

Nomad is a celebration of the world’s finest produce and best wines in a cosy dining space in Surry Hills. The menu is full of smoky flavours, inspired by the chef’s travels through Spain, Morocco and the Middle East. We recently had a chance to dine at NOMAD for the launch of the new Mini Electric Hatch in Sydney and sample the chefs tasting menu, it was simply outstanding and we can’t wait to go back. The newest Surry Hills restaurant to take the foodie scene by storm, Armorica Grande Brasserie arrives with a familiar panache. From the creators of Parlar and Franca, the new French restaurant takes inspiration from the old-world charm of Paris and Brittany. With sections split up between bar, brasserie and refined table-dining, Armorica offers a different atmosphere depending on your preference.
Menu-wise, you can expect modern French with a bit of a twist. A seafood-heavy food offering, Armorica boasts must-try options like octopus roulade, coral trout carpaccio and a bunch of fresh pasta options littered with scampi and bugs. The real star of the show, however, is the five-metre-long Josper grill that was shipped all the way over from Spain. On this blazing beast, you’ll find five different steak frites options, black angus and even a David Blackmore full-blood Wagyu Scotch fillet. Too good.
5. The Rover

A friendly neighbourhood bar in the heart of Surry Hills, The Rover is a bar with charm and sophistication like no other. After reopening its doors in 2022, the bar and restaurant have revealed the final phase of its much-anticipated reinvigoration, complete with a British-inspired seafood bistro upstairs, serving a coastal-inspired menu and fresh seafood. You can also enjoy seasonal cocktails, biodynamic wine and all the dimly-lit, good vibes you could dream of.

A true amalgamation of Italy, South America and of course, Surry Hills, Bastardo has it all. While Italian influences dominate the menu, there’s also a solid Argentinian influence, however, we can’t go past the pasta — the Conchiglie with Zucchini Flowers, Garlic, Chilli & Stracciatella deserves a special mention. And, there is a wine list with over 150 drops, so don’t forget to try a few to complement the kilos of pasta you will undoubtedly be devouring.
