Turns out it pays big money to be The World’s Greatest Showman. Actor Hugh Jackman has dropped a whopping USD$21.125 million (AUD$30 million) on a penthouse in New York’s Chelsea neighbourhood, but it’s not exactly the ostentatious residence that you’d expect. The latest addition to the Australian’s property portfolio is rather bland by celebrity standards, the stunning views overlooking the city more than makeup for the minimalistic aesthetic.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the home was last traded in 2012 for USD$19.4 million. Seller Daniel Fischel, the president of Chicago-based global economic consulting company Compass Lexecon and former dean of the University of Chicago Law School, had listed the property since 2021 and had it originally priced at USD$25 million. Sounds like the superstar from Down Under gave Mr Fischel the “tell him he’s dreaming” treatment.
The 4,675 square-foot-penthouse is located atop an eye-catching 57-unit building designed by Pritzker Prize-winning French architect Jean Nouvel. Offering 360-degree views of Manhattan and the Hudson River down to the Statue of Liberty, the 3,692 square-foot of outdoor space includes a large roof terrace divided into dining and lounging areas.

Inside, the 4 bedroom, 3.5 bathroom home features 14 feet ceilings, two fireplaces, floor-to-ceiling wrap-around windows, sleek terrazzo floors and a unique layout perfect for entertaining, according to the listing with Noble Black of Douglas Elliman. Other amenities in the 23-floor building include a lap pool, fitness centre and screening room.
The purchase comes as Jackman and his wife, Deborra-lee Furness, recently listed their 11,000 square-foot triplex in a Richard-Meier-designed tower close by in Manhattan’s West Village for USD$38.9 million (AU$56 million). Last autumn, Architectural Digest featured the couple’s minimalist East Hampton home, which boasts a similar aesthetic to their most recent acquisition. The 53-year-old, known for his roles in Wolverine, X-Men, The Greatest Showman and Australia, is currently starring in The Music Man on Broadway in Manhattan.
