183m REV Ocean is the World’s Largest Yacht Ever Launched

When a commercial shipbuilder decides to build a yacht, you can bet that it’s going to be huge. Commercial shipbuilder VARD recently launched the world’s largest yacht from their Tulcea, Romania facility. The REV (Research Expedition Vessel) Ocean measures in at 182.9 meters. The yacht was designed by Espen Oeino, with interiors being taken care of by H2 Yacht Design.

The yacht is large enough to carry 60 scientists and 30 crew members on their next scientific exploration. Alternatively, it can be outfitted to hold 36 guests and 54 crew for luxury expeditions. “It’s an emotive experience launching REV,” shares George Gill, Project Director and Owners Representative for the yacht. “To have developed and overseen REV from a blank piece of paper three and a half years ago has been a challenging, educational, rewarding experience. The project evolved into something more complicated and ambitious than I ever assumed and it has been a personal career highlight.”

Once she’s in the water, REV will be powered by 4x Warsila 8l26 2.7 MW ea engines. With those on board, REV will be able to achieve 17.8 knots. The yacht will have a range of 21,120 nautical miles when traveling at 11 knots, which means that the yacht can cover a distance that would be equivalent to circumnavigating 98 percent of the way around the entire planet.

Final outfitting for the yacht will be taken care of in the VARD shipyard in Brattvag, Norway. The last bit of work will take up to eight months to finish, after which she will go to Germany sometime in the first quarter of 2021. “We still have a long way to go,” said Gill of the yacht’s launch in Romania, “and a lot of hard graft ahead, but I cannot wait to get her to Norway and start the next phase. REV will be a truly inspiring vessel in looks and purpose when we deliver her to REV Ocean.”
