Best Haircuts for Big Foreheads

If you’re a male with a big or high forehead, fret not, as there are plenty of great hairstyles to choose from. Some of these styles use texture, bangs, and length to conceal big foreheads, while others sculpt the top to draw eyeballs away from what’s below. Then we have the mighty buzz cut, which turns the natural contours of your skull into a style of its own. Here’s a closer look.

Caesar or 'Edgar Cuts' work well for men with big foreheads

1. Caesar Cut

  • Blunt Fringe: The front hairline is generally cut quite short and blocked out to create a harsh and defined line. Style this forward to add width to an elongated face shape and cover the large forehead.
  • Extra Length on Sides: While the cut resembles a French Crop, the Caesar Cut keeps the hair on top and at the sides relatively long. This allows for a great contrast between the tapered sideburns and the elongated areas, and in this sense, is probably closer to a Blowout Taper.

A ruthless autocrat, perhaps, but Julius Caesar must have had himself some head of hair. His namesake haircut is arguably as popular now as ever before, especially among men with big foreheads or thinning hairlines. The most classic iteration features a forward-facing sweep at the top combined with a horizontal fringe. Everything from the overall texture to the shape of the fringe to the hair side length can vary, giving you plenty of options; however, the traditional Caesar Cut, otherwise known as an ‘Edgar Cut’, leaves the hair on the sides and top relatively long.

“In recent times, we have seen a mass surge in popularity for Caesar Cuts and Blowout Tapers,” Hall says. “In this sense, clients are looking to keep as much contrast between full, darker areas and skin-tapered regions. For men with big foreheads, a Caesar Cut is an obvious choice, as the elongated fringe can help cover up problematic areas and add height to your face shape. That being said, this is not a cut for men with receding hairlines, as the contrast-heavy nature of the cut is better suited to thick, dark hair.”

This style of cut is not unlike a French Crop or Blowout Taper. However, the key difference is the longer lengths on the sides and top. The hair should have a natural fall from the top section to the sides, creating an almost-bowl cut aesthetic. If this is a style you are looking to pursue, there are personal elements that can accentuate the look. A beard or facial hair to achieve a fuller look that takes even more attention away from the forehead.

How to Achieve a Caesar Cut

  • Scissor-cut the top and ask the barber to section and scissor the sides, ensuring it is a point cut for texture.
  • Taper the sideburns and nape to skin, asking for a quick fade or Blowout Taper technique.
  • For a more blunt look, you can ask to line up the front; however, this will depend on your hairline.
  • Using texture powder, style the hair forward.

2. Crew Cut

  • Longer Clipper Length on Top: A longer clipper guard is used to cover the top of the hair, leaving a little bit more hair than a traditional buzz cut.
  • Low-Maintenance Hairstyle for Men: Like the buzz cut, this style is one of the best low-maintenance hairstyles for men.

Best Face Shapes for Crew Cuts:

  • Square
  • Round
  • Diamond

While it might sound counter-productive, one of the best ways to combat a large forehead is to embrace it. Haircuts that cover this section, such as crops and messy styles, are effective when the hair density is thick and the follicles are healthy. If your hair is receding or thinning, however, these hairstyles often look unstructured, leaving you quite unkempt and unruly.

The crew cut is a timeless men’s hairstyle if there ever was one in that it’s effortlessly handsome and easy to maintain. Most varieties combine tapered or faded sides with matching or slightly longer hair at the top. Not just unfettered and stylish, the crew cut is a popular and effective way to conceal receding hairlines. Feel free to experiment with texture on top if you have the volume for it.

“In my opinion, the classic crew cut is most effective when the hair on top is trimmed down to a #4 clipper guard length, with the hair on the sides and back trimmed to a #1,” Hall explains. “This contrast in length gives a nice silhouette that can emphasise the structure of the lower jaw, which makes it perfect for men with oval and triangular face shapes.”

How to Achieve a Crew Cut

  • Run a clipper over the entire head to create a uniform length
  • For a cleaner look, taper or fade the back and sides with a shorter clipper

3. Middle Part Curtains

  • Defined Part in Centre of Hair Line: The key characteristic of this cut is the central part that splits the hair directly down the middle.
  • Loose Flow: With this cut, the hair falls naturally to either side of the part, accentuating the individual waves and movement of the hair type.

  • Triangle

Popularised in the 1990s—think Hugh Grant circa Notting Hill—the middle-part curtains hairstyle has come roaring back into fashion over the last few years. Experts describe it as a clearly defined part down the middle (or near the middle) of the top, flanked by long hair on either side. The idea behind the name is that your bangs fall like curtains down the side of the hair and head, concealing any big foreheads in the process. The style works with straight or messy bangs and requires a bit of maintenance, so be prepared to get busy with the comb and hair product.

How to Achieve a Middle Part

  • Create a distinct parting line down the centre of the top section.
  • Trim even parts on either side of the parting line.
  • Clipper or scissor cut the sides, fading upwards to blend in with the top.
  • Style the hair upwards and backwards.

4. French Crop

  • Blunt Fringe: The front section of the hair will be very short and styled forward. This can help add width to an elongated face shape.
  • Texture: The hair on top should be highly textured, giving a messy and worn-in appearance to offset the bluntness of the fringe.

Best Face Shapes for French Crop

  • Oval
  • Round
  • Square

Combine clean and tapered sides with slightly longer, forward-facing hair up top and you’re looking at a French crop. One of the best hairstyles for men with receding hairlines and big foreheads, the cut has also taken on something of a unisex reputation in the modern age. It’s suitable for all the different hair types and doesn’t require much maintenance, but you’ll definitely want to nail the landing from the get-go, as there can be a fine line between unkempt and stylish.

“As an educator, we spend a lot of time discussing the relationship between the ‘bottom half of the head’ and ‘top half of the head’,” Lino D’Adderio, American Crew educator/owner of Luigi & Sons Barbershop explains. “This is really about making sure you have the correct separation to leave enough room for your scissor-work to build enough bulk around the face and the temple area. That is really important.”

“From the customer’s perspective, you want to be asking for a blend-out fade that keeps the shape lean and tight at the sides, but then builds out to a weighted area at the temple and at the forehead, whether we have loose texture or more of a solid front.”

How to Achieve a French Crop Cut

  • Ask for a fade on the back and sides. The starting point should be particularly short, generally under a 1-blade
  • Scissor-cut the top to around a finger length.
  • Ask to have the top point cut for texture.
  • For a more blunt look, you can ask to line up the front; however, this will depend on your hairline.
  • Using texture powder, style the hair forward.

5. Buzz Cut

  • Clipper Length on Top: Short clipper-length hair on top that leaves little room for styling.
  • Low-Maintenance Hairstyle for Men: The buzz cut is easily the lowest-maintenance hairstyle for men, as it does not require styling.

Best Face Shapes for Buzz Cuts:

  • Oval
  • Square
  • Diamond

Whereas some of the best haircuts for big foreheads for men offer clever concealment, the buzz cut takes things in the opposite direction. Typically achieved through an electric razor, this particular style features short or ultra-thin hair around the entire skull.

Style ambassador Andrew Zumbo describes the humble buzz cut as a “classic, low-maintenance option that emphasises facial features and works well with various hair types”, and it is hard to disagree. While the shaved head look may not suit everyone, those with oval, square, or diamond face shapes generally make this style work.

In recent years, we’ve seen a mass resurgence in popularity for the simple and straightforward cut, as demonstrated by celebrities such as Brad Pitt, Zayn Malik, and Channing Tatum, who enjoy the clean-cut, low-maintenance look. You can experiment with texture by tapering around the sides and going a little longer on top or rock an even length through and through. Some might call it the perfect way to get ahead of any impending baldness by rocking the bald look before the bald look rocks you!

“As I’ve said before, a quality buzz cut can often do wonders for your overall appearance, especially when it plays off the contours of your face,” Hall says. “As mentioned above, you can take the top down with a longer clipper in order to leave yourself some hair to style and play with, but the best option is likely a #2 or #3 guard over the scalp.”

How to Achieve a Buzz Cut

  • Run a clipper over the entire head to create a uniform length
  • For a cleaner look, taper or fade the back and sides with a shorter clipper

6. Short Textured

  • Texture: Ask your barber to point-cut the top section for extra texture and movement.
  • Powder: Rather than weighing the hair down with thick creams and pastes, a texture powder is the most natural-looking option for this style.

Short textured haircuts can take various forms, so there’s plenty of room for experimentation. Combine tapered sides with longer hair on top facing upward for a stylish quiff, or bring down the bangs for a textured fringe that imparts youthful energy (and covers any big foreheads). From slick undercuts to a curly pompadour to faux hawks and more, the possibilities are quite vast even when the hair length stays relatively short.

“The key element for making a messy fringe hairstyle work is texture, a visual aid that helps to create volume and definition,” Hall says. “If you have a large forehead, adding movement to the top section can help draw attention away from the wider and elongated hairline. Rather than styling it directly up, whihc will only accentuate the problem area, focus on moving the hair down and forward. This will drive movement and help you to cover the temple areas.”

How to Achieve a Short Textured Hairstyle

  • Ask to clipper the sides short or fade from 0
  • Blend the sides using a combination of clipper over comb and scissor work
  • Trim the top to around two to four inches
  • Ask to have the top point cut to increase texture
  • Style using a texture product such as matte clay or powder.

7. Choppy Bangs

  • Texture and Volume: With this short curly hairstyle for men, the emphasis is placed on the front of the hair, showcasing the natural texture and volume of wavy hair.
  • Added Length on Top: To achieve the wavy or messy fringe with curls, you will need to keep the hair on top longer to allow the waves to form, while the sides and back are typically cut shorter.

Choppy bangs have taken off on TikTok so this is what one might call a young man’s haircut (with or without the big forehead). The overall look can vary, but the underlying concept remains the same: applying layers at the fringe to deliver something unique and eye-catching. Match it with anything from a choppy crop top fade to long straight hair as you cultivate your own signature style.

How to achieve Choppy Bangs:

  • Use mousse on damp hair and scrunch your wavy fringe at the top, giving it volume and a slightly messy appearance
  • Keep everything in place by way of a light hairspray
  • Add a texturing product if you want more texture

8. Side-Swept Fringe

  • Elongated Fringe: The section at the front of the hairline will be kept longer, allowing you to style it down and to one side.
  • Length on Sides and Back: There will be a reasonable amount of length left on both the back and sides to ensure there is no definitive contrast between the front and side lengths.

Here we have another haircut that’s become more unisex in modern times…not that there’s anything wrong with that. That said, the side-swept fringe remains a classic men’s haircut for foreheads of all sizes. Apply a taper or undercut around the sides and go a little longer on top, sweeping the hair over to one side and adding a little product for a firm hold. If it’s good enough for David Beckham (and Victoria Beckham while we’re at it), it’s good enough for you.

How to achieve Side-Swept Fringe:

  • Ask to scissor cut the top and sides, ensuring extra attention is paid to texturising the top.
  • Keep the fringe section long and over-direct the hair to one side when cutting.
  • To style, keep the hair messy and, using fingers, style the hair down and to the side.
  • Use a texturising product or clay to keep the finish matte and messy

9. Curly Taper

  • Faded Sideburns: The main characteristic of this curly hairstyle for guys is the faded sideburns. Depending on where the blend point is, you could opt for a low, mid or high taper with curly hair.
  • Gradual Transition: The hair on the sides and back of the head gradually fades into longer hair on the top of the head.

Best Face Shapes for Curly Taper

  • Oval
  • Round

The curly taper is pretty much what it sounds like: curly hair on top that gets thinner and thinner as it descends around the crown. This is a great hairstyle for men who have high foreheads but aren’t balding because some discernible volume will go a long way. It’s also a great way to add definition to curly hair and present yourself as a man of purpose and style.

“In my opinion, this style of cut is more versatile and complementary than the traditional skin fade or buzz cut, in that it is more easily adapted to suit the shape of the client’s head,” Hall says. “By focusing solely on the nape and sideburns, you can leave a little extra room at the fringe and temple areas, which can ultimately reduce the visual impact of a large forehead.”

How to achieve a Curly Taper:

  • Run a clipper on the sideburns and nape
  • Gradually fade these areas down to the skin
  • Ask to keep the blend point of the hair below the temple line
  • Spray a light mist of water or sea salt spray onto the top of the hair
  • Using a diffuser, work the hair with a hairdryer

10. Mod Cut

  • Soft Fringe: The front section of the hair will be short and feathered to create a soft finish that helps frame the face when styled forward.
  • Elongated Sideburns: The sideburns are significantly longer and cut to frame the face around the temple and cheekbones.

We have TikTok and Insta Reels to thank for the resurrection of certain retro trends, including the 60s-style mod cut. As seen on stars like Jacob Elordi, it typically combines short to medium hair around the sides with more volume up top and a straight or textured fringe. It’s another haircut that’s recommended for men with big foreheads who don’t necessarily have receding hairlines. And while some mod cuts strive for a messy or choppy aesthetic, make no mistake: regular maintenance is required.

“As fashion cycles through trends, the visibility of retro styles in media, music videos, and social platforms will likely spark renewed interest in mod cuts. Especially, given the Oasis brothers are touring in 2025 has sparked huge popularity,” Zumbo explains.

For the Mod style, the top section of the hair is cut shorter, employing a series of texturing techniques such as point cutting, cross-sectioning, and feather-blading. This will ultimately create the illusion of movement, which can prove critical when sweeping the hair forward. By doing this, you can structure and manipulate the hair to better cover the forehead and draw attention away from your areas of concern.

Further, if you have a wide forehead, this hairstyle can help draw attention away from the width and create a stronger sense of facial harmony. Importantly, while this retro style is rooted in the past, it is versatile enough to be adapted for modern tastes.

How to Achieve a Mod Cut

  • Scissor-cut or feather-blade the hair around the ears and fringe.
  • Ask to keep the sideburns long and framed around the face.
  • For a more blunt look, you can ask to line up the front; however, this will depend on your hairline.
  • Using texture powder, style the hair forward.

11. Modern Mullet

  • Short Mullet Section: The mullet section of the hair at the back should be kept very short, just visible, flicking out behind the ears.

Best Face Shapes for Modern Mullet:

  • Oblong
  • Oval

The very word ‘mullet’ might have you running for the hills, but there are ways to execute this hairstyle without looking like someone who lives out of their van circa 1985. “Business in the front and party in the back” is how it’s described, which is another way of saying that the hair goes shorter and neater at the front and gets longer and wilder as it trails down the back.

The concept is a bit more versatile these days than it was back in its prime and that’s good news for men with big or high foreheads. Experiment with texture up top or at the front and consider applying a taper or undercut around the sides as you cultivate a modern mullet of your own.

“As I mentioned in our guide to mullets, I generally recommend styling the top of the hair with a messy fringe to create a bit of texture and movement, while the back should be ruffled naturally with your fingers,” Hall says. “For styling, a texturising powder or sea salt spray will be your best bet, as it allows for moulding without adding too much weight to the hair follicles.”

How to Achieve a Modern Mullet

  • Point cut the top and keep the sides relatively short
  • Gradually fade the sideburns down – however, this does not need to be to skin
  • Feather blade the back of the hair and keep the length an inch or two longer than the longest section of the sides

How Big is a Big Forehead in a Man?

A “normal” male hairline begins at around 7-8 cm above the space between your eyebrows. Hence, a forehead that extends over 8cm above the eyebrow line is considered “big” by most standards. Bear in mind, however, that face shapes and proportions can vary and one man’s big forehead can very well be another man’s average-looking forehead. For instance, men with longer faces might have higher foreheads that won’t stand out the way they would on men with shorter faces.

How to Style Hair When You Have a High Forehead

Some men are going bald and dealing with a bigger forehead as a result, while others just have big foreheads. If you’re the former, consider styling your hair in a way that doesn’t rely on too much volume and texture. Some good examples would be a buzz cut, a short fade, or even side-swept bangs.

Meanwhile, men with naturally big foreheads can incorporate voluminous hairstyles like a textured crop, modern mullet, middle-part curtains, and more. Styling your bangs and letting them grow is especially important as it can help conceal a big forehead.

What to Avoid

When it comes to hairstyles for men with big foreheads, there are a number of no-go zones. Stylistic choices are undoubtedly in the eyes of the beholder, and while you may be able to get away with some rather unexpected decisions, there are some things you should typically avoid.

Slick-Back Styles

The one thing you don’t want to do is draw extra attention to the forehead, meaning you should avoid slicked-back hairstyles, ponytails, or anything else that all but eliminates the bangs. Certain types of quiffs and pompadours pull the hair upward and likewise expose the full extent of your forehead, though there are variations that extend over the fringe, for which a lot of hair volume is required. Hall advised against hairstyles that pull the hair backwards as they can accentuate the length and height of the forehead.

“In a general sense, hairstyles that slick the hair in a backwards direction from fringe to nape will accentuate the height and length of a forehead, so it’s usually a good idea to avoid these,” he says. “Cuts such as pompadour and slick-backs are classics, but the direction of the hair often draws greater attention to the problematic area.”

Importantly, Hall explains that the key element to success for any hairstyle is confidence. Being comfortable in your personal style can help make stylistic choices seem more intentional, and this is especially true for haircuts.

“One thing that I have earned in all my years working in styling and men’s hairdressing is that confidence can transform style in an instant,” he says. “Walton Goggins is a terrific example of someone with a big forehead that directly leans into the style, opting for a loose, brushed-back cut that essentially puts his hairline on full display. For some guys, embracing the option, either with a buzz cut or a style that doesn’t shy away from the forehead area, can actually be beneficial, but again, it’s all about what you feel comfortable in.”

Wet Look Products

If you have naturally voluminous hair and want to explore certain styles like a curly taper or mod cut, then a wet-look hair product can dial up your style and distinction. However, if you have a receding hairline, then you should avoid the wet look because it can make thin hair appear even thinner. Apply some light hair product and focus on styling the fringe instead.
