Just when you think A. Lange & Söhne can’t possibly have a more triumphant 2026, the German maison unveils a trio of references that couldn’t more acutely showcase the astounding breadth of its watchmaking mastery.
With a pair of 1815 UP/DOWN releases and a gorgeous TRIPLE SPLIT in platinum, the Glashütte-based firm has once again demonstrated why it has come to be held so close to Man of Many’s horological heart. Where the 1815 UP/DOWN releases showcase the watchmaker’s mastery of traditional design (with its signature touch of individual flair), the TRIPLE SPLIT in platinum is a chronograph of the highest order, supreme in its engineering execution and material mastery.
So, let’s explore what makes each of these releases so special, and why they further cement (as if such a thing were needed) A. Lange & Söhne’s reputation as a watchmaker of the very highest order.
Dual 1815 UP/DOWN
A. Lange & Söhne’s 1815 UP/DOWN releases are constructed around a central idea executed with unwavering focus. That is, giving the wearer the ability to tell precisely how much power remains in their watch’s mainspring at a glance.
This concept has deep roots in Saxon watchmaking, where a subdial sporting “AUF” (up) and “AB” (down) has long been used to indicate a fully wound movement versus one that’s nearly spent. Here, it draws inspiration from historic Lange pocket watches and remains a useful, sophisticated reminder to ensure your watch remains wound.
Zooming out, the two new 1815 UP/DOWN pieces blend this kind of sheer practicality with an elegance only A. Lange & Söhne can muster. The releases boast a compact 37.5 mm, making them even more streamlined than the already svelte format of previous 39-mm models. Collectors looking to secure one of these limited-edition releases (only 300 of each will be made) can choose between 750 pink gold and 750 white gold variations.
These precious metals are paired with a contrasting blue dial, which, on close inspection, reveals the hallmarks of A. Lange & Söhne’s rich watchmaking heritage. With the railway-track minute scale encircling the Arabic numerals, a recessed central dial segment, and the elegant lancet hands, each element places legibility front and centre while striking the perfect balance between subtlety and character.
Turning the watch over, the sapphire caseback reveals the manually wound Movement L051.2, a clear demonstration of why A. Lange & Söhne’s engineering and artistry are so esteemed. Here, the three-quarter plate is crafted from untreated German silver, the visibly integrated winding wheels are embellished with solarisation, the gold chatons are secured with blued screws, while the balance cock is manually engraved with a freehand technique. Each detail ties its host timepiece back to the maison’s legendary watchmaking tradition.
Further, beneath the balance cock, a classic screw balance, an indexless oscillation system, and an in-house balance spring assure a high rate of accuracy. Plus, the UP/DOWN display isn’t bolted on as an afterthought, but rather integrated directly into the movement via a compact planetary gear system, which helps keep the calibre’s height to a mere 4.6 mm while still delivering 72 hours of power reserve.
Finally, as if assembling such an engineering marvel with absolute accuracy once wasn’t enough, this work of art was assembled twice during production (as is A. Lange & Söhne custom) to ensure it meets the maison’s unwaveringly exacting standards.
Platinum TRIPLE SPLIT
If the 1815 UP/DOWN references represent A. Lange & Söhne’s unimpeachable traditionalist credentials, the TRIPLE SPLIT in platinum sees the maison pushing modern chronograph engineering to its very limit.
When the brand’s TRIPLE SPLIT debuted in 2018, it became the first (and remains the only) split-seconds chronograph capable of measuring intermediate and comparative times with an aggregate duration of up to twelve hours, and a flyback function. Initially appearing in white gold with a grey dial and later in pink gold with a blue dial, this third edition, limited to 100 pieces, joins the lineup by pairing an exquisite platinum case with a rhodié dial and contrasting grey subdials.
A. Lange & Söhne watches are elite by their very nature, but this TRIPLE SPLIT’s rarity, aesthetics, and capabilities secure its place in the stratosphere. For one thing, it boasts a clear visual hierarchy. The lion’s share of the main dial is allocated to the chronograph and rattrapante seconds hands. An auxiliary dial at 4 o’clock houses the jumping minute counters, which snap forward one increment the instant a full minute elapses. Alongside this, a subsidiary seconds dial is positioned at 8 o’clock, and above them both, at 12 o’clock, a smaller display tracks the hour counters. Directly beneath, the Lange-signature power-reserve indicator, which shows how much of the 55-hour reserve is left and mirrors the “AUF” (up) and “AB” (down) design discussed above, is the most modestly sized and occupies the 6 o’clock position.
All of this, and the Movement L132.1 powering it, imbues the watch with tremendous capabilities. Because of its one-of-a-kind triple rattrapante mechanism, the watch can track comparative times ranging from a single minute all the way up to twelve hours.
If that’s confusing, take the scenario of a marathon. The TRIPLE SPLIT can capture intermediate splits for multiple runners at the 10-km, 20-km, and 30-km marks, and still measure both the winner’s time and a second overall time. Alternatively, if you consider a journey with a classic automobile, a driver might want to record several waypoints along their route while an additive timing mode tallies the total driving time, breaks included.
Once again, if you turn the watch over, A. Lange & Söhne’s total mastery of materials, engineering, and execution is on full display. Here, an astonishing 567 minute components work in harmony to achieve what should be impossible.
Levers, springs, and rockers carry straight graining while the movement’s circumferential chamfers are bevelled. The bridges, made of untreated German silver, are embellished with Glashütte ribbing, alongside five gold chatons secured by screws, and an intricately hand-engraved balance cock.
In short, no matter which angle you view it from, the Platinum TRIPLE SPLIT is an extraordinary achievement.
A Statement in Contrasts
Taken together, these references make A. Lange & Söhne’s breadth as a watchmaker impossible to ignore.
Where the 1815 UP/DOWN takes one key element, the power-reserve display, and executes it with absolute mastery, the platinum TRIPLE SPLIT’s chronograph of the utmost mechanical ambition embodies the opposite and takes it just as far.
To succeed so completely at both is a rarity, but to do so at the same time is astounding. Then again, this is A. Lange & Söhne, a maison that by no accident has become one of the most influential and esteemed names in Haute Horlogerie.
