Russell Built Porsche recently unveiled their prototype for a 1991 Porsche 911 964 that is Baja ready. The build pays homage to Porsche’s early success in off-road racing in the early 1980s. While “off road” doesn’t immediately come to mind when you think of the German automaker’s cars, the prototype does immediately bring to mind Porsche as it maintains the classic body lines Porsche is known for.

Russell started out by trimming over 400 pounds from the 964 Carrera 4 Cabriolet before adding composite widebody fenders, tacking on an additional 15 inches in width. The hood was swapped out for a moulded rally-style bonnet and the doors and hardtop were lightened up as well.

Under the new hood is a 3.8-litre six-cylinder that has been modified to create 365 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Mating to the engine is a G50 six-speed manual sequential gearbox. The interior keeps its focus on the driver, featuring Motec control panels and folding Sparco SPX carbon seats. A full roll cage offers more security and a coat of sound-deadening ceramic will help keep your hearing safe. And to make the ride more comfortable, the Porsche coms with a custom suspension made from 7075-grade alloy and 4130 Chromoly steel.

In total, the prototype boasts 12 inches of suspension in the front and 13 inches in the back. The car rides on a custom set of Baja wheels shod in off-road Toyo tires. Should things get dicey, you can rely on the heavy-duty front and rear bumpers to push your way through.

Acquiring this unique take on the classic 1991 Porsche 911 964 Baja Prototype is a simple matter of winning an online auction (the current bid sits at a measly $235,500). Once you’ve got it, you’ll have the coolest Porsche in the neighbourhood or in the Baja race.
