“When I started racing, I just wanted to do the best I could and my goal was Formula 1. I’m proud of what I have achieved already and that, for me, is enough, in a way.”
With four championships in four years, Oracle Red Bull Racing star Max Verstappen finds himself in illustrious company. The Dutch star now stands on the precipice of greatness, the door left tantalisingly ajar for a record-shattering career. But somehow, Max Verstappen isn’t fazed. Ahead of the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, the reigning champ puts it all on the line, revealing that he’s already achieved everything he wanted in the sport. Now, he’s just trying to maintain it.
It’s a stark departure from the calculated killer we’re used to seeing behind the wheel, but maybe this is the new Max Verstappen. Perhaps with the birth of a new season, a familiar family on board as timekeeper and the arrival of a fresh-faced teammate, the Formula 1 icon is playing things differently. Under the fading sunlight of a golden Melbourne autumn sky, all was revealed.

12Cilindri Spider: Ferrari’s V12 Engine is Not Dead Yet
It’s the pinnacle of engines, but every time you slip behind the wheel of a V12, you can’t help the nagging feeling that it may well be your last. As automotive journalist Ben McKimm found out when he travelled to Lisbon earlier this year, however, the Italian marquee Ferrari isn’t quite done with its naturally aspirated endeavours. If the AUD$886,800 supercar is anything to go by, there is still a whole lot of life left in the V12 industry.

How Lauren Jackson Took on the World and Won

In raw and open retrospective with Editor-in-Chief Nick Hall, the Aussie sports icon unpacks her incredible comeback and the lessons she’s learned along th way.

How Purple Pingers Became the Bane of Landlords Nationwide
Jordan van den Lamb, better known as ‘Purple Pingers’, or ‘that guy that does Shit Rentals on TikTok’, has made a name for himself calling out landlords on their parasitic behaviour. Now, he’s running for Senate.
In this edition of our regular series ‘That Escalated Quickly’, journalist Dean Blake sat down with van den Lamb to unpack how a self-confessed ‘snarky dude on social media’ became the nation’s voice for affordable housing. Drawing his fair share of criticism from both political pundits and the industry at large, the spritely Aussie is learning that change doesn’t come easy. Robin Hood—he is not, but he might just be the next best thing.

‘What I Thought Was Right’: Cam Smith on LIV Golf

Two years later, the Open Championship winner is charging full steam ahead on his plans to drive youth golf interest. Jacky Ickx is Still on a Timeless Pursuit of Perfection
When others ran, Jacky Ickx walked. The year was 1969, and it was a powerful and poignant statement against the lack of safety precautions at the time. In this rare sit-down at the Chopard boutique in Sydney with journalist Ben McKimm, Ickx reflects on his 30-year partnership with the luxury watchmaker, the evolution of motorsport, and why he chooses to live in the present rather than dwell on the past.

How COVID-19 Gave the ‘Wolf Man’ its Bite
Despite being labelled a ‘safe’ film, Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man turned out to be a rather divisive horror instalment. The follow-up to the Aussie director’s 2020 hit The Invisible Man was met with mixed reviews largely due to its solemn commitment to keeping audiences (quite literally) in the dark, but it turns out, that was all by design. In a rare and honest chat with entertainment journalist Dean Blake, Whannell reveals the unique and downright confronting inspiration behind the flick and what horror creature he’s looking to tackle next.

Robert Irwin is Making His Mark
“You’ve got to be able to be a horticulturist, a scientist, an entertainer, and for me, a photographer. I’ve gotten to work in maybe 20 different industries within this one career, and I’m very lucky to be able to do all that.”
In many ways, Robert Irwin was born to be on camera. Imbued with the same infectious energy that made his crocodile-hunting father, Steve Irwin, a national hero, Robert’s seemingly tireless enthusiasm for wildlife conservation has not only built upon the family legacy—it’s kicked it up a notch or two. In this eye-opening chat, the lively 21-year-old reveals that while he has to wear a multitude of hats, he considers himself a conservationist first and an entertainer second.

Enchanté: Daniel Ricciardo is Doing Things His Way
Australian motorsports legend Daniel Ricciardo has always cut an impressive figure, but his latest venture takes things in an entirely new direction. In this one-off chat with auto journalist Ben McKimm, the Honey Badger discusses the unique origin, evolution and acceleration of his new lifestyle brand Enchanté. An outlet to express his creativity and blend a bevy of bold passions, the new venture proves that Daniel Ricciardo is still full of surprises.

A Look Back at the Best-Selling Video Games of All Time

Say what you will about the icons of gaming, but USD$455 billion in revenue per year simply cannot be ignored. Way to go, Mario.

How a 9-Day Adventure Turned Me into a Cruise Holiday Convert
If the statistics are to be believed, around 1.25 million Australians—or roughly five per cent of the entire population—opt to spend their holidays on board a gigantic floating resort. For many, the idea of trudging all the way down to the docks and shuffling on single file is hardly the benchmark for rest and relaxation, but after spending nine nights aboard Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas, writer John Guanzon finally understands why. As he explains, the mega cruise adventure took the hassle work out of travel, but it isn’t all waterslides and endless buffets.

Our first Digital Edition of 2025 has hit the virtual shelf and it’s a mammoth way to kick off the year. After a blockbuster first 12 months that saw us champion themes around Reinvention, Creation, Trailblazers and Disruption, this quarter we set our sights on the ICONS. Chronicling the bold and brave individuals who dared to break the mould, we split this issue into three sections—Past, Present and Future—recounting the remarkable stories of triumph that turned everyday people into world champions and celebrating those individuals who stand at the precipice of greatness.

From the Editor-in-Chief
I’ve always found ‘icon’ to be a funny word. In its traditional sense, it refers to an extraordinary individual whose fame extends far beyond their sphere of relevance, but in reality, icons simply make the impossible accessible. You need only one beguiling persona to transform a topic of utter indifference into a point of passion. For Formula 1 fans, Max Verstappen is one such figure.
A four-time world champion in motorsport’s most daring division, the Dutchman has enjoyed a level of domination not seen since the early days of Hamilton and Schumacher, but he isn’t like any driver we’ve seen before. Fiercely private and meticulous with his words, Verstappen is more calculated killer than charismatic character, and perhaps that’s what makes our cover story with the F1 icon so intriguing.
In a raw and unfiltered discussion ahead of the 2025 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, Verstappen revealed what it’s really like to slip behind the wheel when you know that lives, and legacies, are on the line. But he wasn’t the only star we profiled this quarter.
In our ICONS issue, we paid specific attention to eras, charting icons of the past, present and future. From classic vehicles like the Lamborghini Countach to up-and-coming stars such as Cosmo Jarvis, this volume is loaded with names that are destined to ring out in our collective memories for decades. So, take your marks and start your engines, the next crop of ICONS has arrived.

ICONS
What does it mean to be an icon? In this issue, we detail the extraordinary people, products and places that have shaped our modern world. From dominating sportspeople who changed their respective game to the innovative watchmakers that made sure they got there on time, these are the names that continue to inspire. Icons challenge the system and dare to do things differently, often while under a heavy blanket of criticism.
For Cosmo Jarvis, icon status came in a flash. The British actor had been toiling away for years, producing a swathe of small but remarkable roles in hits like Peaky Blinders and Lady Macbeth, but it wasn’t until he landed the lead role in the breakout FX series Shōgun that Jarvis’ star finally rose. Now, the 35-year-old has the world at his feet, with a string of blockbuster films set to launch him into the entertainment stratosphere, but before he jets off, we caught up with him to discuss fame, fixation and his surprising new film.

Icons don’t always get to choose their path, however. Sometimes, they’re simply born into it. Such is the case of Australian wildlife legend Robert Irwin. At just 21 years old, Irwin possesses all the charisma and effervescence of a seasoned professional, able to delicately articulate the process of moving from child celebrity to advocate to television star without taking a pause. A lifelong warrior for the environment, Irwin has become a mainstay on international television, stepping firmly out of the shadow of his famous dad and into a spotlight all of his own. It’s an inspiring look at what can happen when passion meets opportunity.
Elsewhere, the Man of Many team explored the theme in their own unique way. Journalist Ben McKimm sat down with Japanese streetwear legend Hiroshi Fujiwara to discuss his latest Moncler x FRGMT SS25 collection and the future of fashion collaborations, while Dean Blake had a hair-raising chat with Australian horror legend Leigh Whannell focused on his latest flick Wolf Man. The latter’s unique approach to the classic creature from the dark proved that icons, no matter their age, can always be revived. Check out all of our ICONS features for this quarter and sign up for our newsletter for more.

After ‘Shōgun’, Cosmo Jarvis is Breaking Out
Cosmo Jarvis stands at the brink of a great uprising. The stocky 35-year-old Brit, revered for his small but meaningful roles in Peaky Blinders and Lady Macbeth, has carved out a niche for remarkable character-driven performances that often fly under the radar. But when he found himself helming the biggest show on television, the world took notice. Jarvis’ 10-episode stint as John Blackthorne in the blockbuster FX epic Shōgun catapulted the emerging star into the stratosphere of global cinema and sent casting agents scrambling to get a hold of him. What he did next shocked them all.
Eschewing the traditional Hollywood trajectory, Jarvis’ first project post-Shōgun wasn’t a VFX-laden blockbuster, but rather a small-budget independent Australian film from a first-time director. Starring alongside Guy Pearce and Vincent Miller, Jarvis leads INSIDE, a powerful and devastatingly human portrayal of life behind bars. Ahead of the film’s release, Man of Many Editor-in-Chief Nick Hall caught up with the future icon to discuss fame, falsehoods and the constant search for ‘moments of levity’.

How the Lamborghini Countach Went from Poster Car to Icon
It’s been more than 50 years since the iconic Lamborghini Countach was unveiled to the world at the Geneva Motor Show on March 11, 1971. While it certainly saw some down years in the hands of some not-so-thoughtful owners throughout the early 2000s, its recent explosion in popularity has seen new collectors emerge from the cracks, eager to finally get their hands on a true poster car. So how did the Lamborghini Countach become the industry’s most coveted supercar?

The Long and Contentious History of the Negroni Cocktail
The Negroni is many things to many different people. To some, it’s an affable aperitif designed to mark the end of the working day, while to others, it’s a bitter flavour punch that hits a little too hard. Its unique sensory profile is indisputable and, perhaps most remarkable of all, appears to have remained largely unchanged for over a century. But that really depends on who you ask. It turns out, the intriguing history of the Negroni cocktail is almost as divisive as the flavour it imparts.

Menswear Icons You Should Own: Baracuta G9 Harrington
The Baracuta G9 is an item every man should have at least one of in his wardrobe. In this first instalment of Menswear Icons You Should Own—Man of Many’s new series exploring timeless menswear staples—Rob Edwards unpacks the history behind the classic jacket, discovering how this inherently British garment created the Harrington blueprint that so many would go on to follow.
Often imitated but never bettered, the G9 is the definition of essential outerwear, so join us as we chronicle the signature details and those who’ve worn it best, from actors and musicians to athletes and public figures.

Penfolds Grange: How a Divisive Drop Became Australia’s Best Wine
Seventy years ago, visionary winemaker Max Schubert’s homage to South Australian terroir left critics divided. Now, it’s the country’s most coveted release. In a rare interview, chief winemaker Peter Gago unpacks the remarkable origin of the famous vintage, recounting the innovative steps Schubert took to turn the Aussie wine world on its head. From maturation to vineyard, Grange’s long and storied heritage is a tale of triumph that is primed for a rich and decadent new chapter.

The Godfather of Streetwear Explains His Unique Taste for the Technical
There are collaborators, and then there’s Hiroshi Fujiwara. Nicknamed “The Godfather of Streetwear,” the designer, DJ, producer, and street style tastemaker is the undisputed king of collaborators. Ahead of a unique new drop, journalist Ben McKimm spoke to the polymath about his uncompromising approach to adaptive collaboration. With his Moncler x FRGMT SS25 collection recently hitting the shelves, Fujiwara is finding balance in the subtlety of deep cultural references.

Max Verstappen Has Nothing Left to Prove
“When I started racing, I just wanted to do the best I could and my goal was Formula 1. I’m proud of what I have achieved already and that, for me, is enough, in a way.”

Max Verstappen Has Nothing Left to Prove
“When I started racing, I just wanted to do the best I could and my goal was Formula 1. I’m proud of what I have achieved already and that, for me, is enough, in a way.”

As he explains, the mega cruise adventure took the hassle work out of travel, but it isn’t all waterslides and endless buffets.
