For thirty years, the way into Australian modelling barely changed. An agent flagged potential, pointed you or your kid towards a photographer they knew, and a few hours in a private studio later you had a portfolio that might lead somewhere. It was a small, closed circuit that ran on who knew whom. POP Photography is one of the studios pulling that door open, with purpose-built spaces in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane that shoot headshots, modelling portfolios and personal branding sessions for first-timers of every age.

Across the three cities the studios run close to 108 sessions a week, which is enough volume to keep the price of entry sensible without dropping the production values you would expect from an editorial shoot.

Casting agencies including Bubblegum Casting, which has represented Australian children’s talent since 1981, and its adult sibling Hunter Talent have started sending applicants to these studios as a more accessible first step than the old pathway.

POP Photography Studio Session

The Redfern studio is typical of the approach: a 68-square-metre warehouse fit-out with industrial bones, soft natural light and dedicated styling areas. It’s built to make a nervous eight-year-old or a self-conscious teenager feel comfortable rather than scrutinised, and the same logic holds for an adult who has never stood in front of a professional camera.

A session opens with a short styling and direction conversation, before moving through a series of looks under professional lighting. The whole thing is run by photographers who specialise in newcomers rather than seasoned models. Afterwards you review the images and pick the ones you want to keep.

Session types cover headshots, modelling portfolios, personal branding, family or sibling shoots and the Golden Ticket premium experience, so it works whether you’re testing whether your kid has something, refreshing a LinkedIn headshot or building an agency application from scratch.

Why the Modelling Pathway Is Changing

“We kept hearing the same story from parents,” says Alex, co-founder of POP Photography. “Their kid had been told by an agent that they had real potential, and the family had no idea what to do next. The whole pathway felt mysterious and a bit intimidating. We wanted to build something that felt the opposite of that: professional, but warm, and genuinely welcoming to people who’d never set foot in a studio before.”

The historical version of the industry rewarded families already loosely connected to entertainment. The new model assumes nothing. It’s built for the person who saw a casting call online, wondered if they or their child might have something, and had no idea where to start. Established operators have been slow to embrace it, but POP Photography says agencies are actively booking from the portfolios its studios produce, which is the only metric that matters.

“We’ve had parents tell us afterwards that the best part wasn’t the photos,” Alex says. “It was that they walked out feeling like they understood the industry for the first time. Whether the kid ends up booked or not is almost beside the point.”

POP Photography FAQs

Where are the POP Photography studios?

POP Photography operates purpose-built studios in Melbourne, Sydney’s Redfern and Brisbane, running close to 108 sessions a week across the three cities.

Who are the sessions for?

Kids, teens and aspiring adult models, including complete first-timers. Session types include headshots, modelling portfolios, personal branding, family or sibling shoots and the Golden Ticket premium experience.

What happens during a session?

A short styling and direction conversation, a series of looks under professional lighting with photographers who specialise in newcomers, then an image review where you choose the shots you want to keep.

Do casting agencies use POP Photography portfolios?

POP Photography says Bubblegum Casting, which has represented Australian children’s talent since 1981, and its adult agency Hunter Talent direct applicants to its studios, and that agencies are booking from the resulting portfolios.

If modelling has always looked like a closed shop, or you simply want a set of professional images that do you justice, the studios in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane are the accessible first step. Pick a location and session type and POP Photography takes it from there.
