Nintendo Drops a ‘Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom’ Inspired Switch OLED

Nintendo’s obsession with launching special-edition Switch consoles for its high-profile exclusive titles continues with the special-edition Zelda-themed Switch OLED. Just like clockwork, Nintendo has come out with a special-edition Zelda-themed Switch OLED to hype up the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. During the recent gameplay reveal for the upcoming game, the Japanese gaming giant teased the first official look at the new special edition to its lineup. Check it out below.

Instead of announcing a Switch successor, Nintendo is betting big on the roughly seven-year-old hardware to drive sales up. Since it’s a repackaged version of the regular model, the Tears of the Kingdom edition Switch OLED comes with the same underlying hardware. However, it isn’t about power or performance here. Aimed and designed for hardcore fans and collectors, this special edition Switch OLED boasts some impressive designs inspired by the sequel’s art style and overall theme. The console itself features a mixture of white, gold and green colours and patterned designs from the upcoming game. The Joy-Cons also get a design upgrade, featuring gold-painted colours and runic inscriptions waltzing up from the lower portion in green and white.

The artwork even carries over onto the dock which proudly bears the Hylian Crest in a mixture of white and gold colouring right at its centre. So if you are looking to cop these, the Tears of the Kingdom edition Switch OLED will hit shelves on April 28 with a price tag of USD$359.99 or (AUD$540). Since this is just a standalone version, you’ll have to shell out extra to buy the game. But a special edition Switch isn’t the only thing Nintendo is planning to release. There’s even a Pro controller and an official carrying case scheduled to release on May 12 to coincide with the launch of Tears of the Kingdom. They’ll cost USD$75 and USD$25 respectively and boast the same design language as the console.

Tears of the Kingdom is one of the biggest titles releasing this year and will continue Link’s journey across the sprawling world of Hyrule. As per the game’s synopsis, “The journey is yours to create in this sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, an epic adventure across the land and skies of Hyrule. In a world fuelled by your imagination, you’ll need to harness the power of Link’s new abilities to fight back against the malevolent forces that threaten the kingdom.”
