Netflix’s smash hit series Cobra Kai is back and better than ever, with a new trailer revealing what fans can expect from the upcoming season of the show. Even more exciting is just how close the season is to launching, with Cobra Kai season 5 set to drop on September 9. Picking up where the last season ended, the new instalment finds us in the aftermath of the All Valley Karate Tournament, which resulted in Terry Silver having complete control of Cobra Kai. However, this new trailer reveals his plans to expand the Dojo and essentially monopolise the whole of the San Fernando Valley. With Silver’s karate teaching methods encouraging a more brutal and unforgiving form of the fighting technique, Daniel LaRusso must find a way to ensure that Silver’s expansion plans are put to bed.

Naturally, season five sets up an enticing bevy of punches and rivalries, however, the latest announcement teases the team-up we’ve been waiting for. That’s right, folks! Long-time rivals Daniel and Johnny appear to be teaming up to bring a stop to Silver and his karate teachers. For long-time fans of the original Karate Kid movie, this season is shaping up to be a great moment of fan service and nostalgia with – hopefully – multiple callbacks to the classic 1984 film.
The Cobra Kai series has been a surprise hit, one that simply continues to grow in popularity. Originally, the show premiered on YouTube Premium in 2018 as an original series for the platform. However, Netflix took after the show in 2020 after YouTube chose to stop making more content for the series. Since Netflix acquired the show, Cobra Kai has thrived on the streaming service. The show’s creators, Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg are proud and grateful for the way the show continues to grow.
During an interview with Goldderby in July 2022, Hurwitz reflected on the progress of Cobra Kai, stating how “the show has had a long journey and we’ve been proud of the work that we’ve been doing since the beginning.” In the same interview, Schlossberg also spoke about how each season does build upon its predecessor but that they are mindful of making sure the heart of the series is never lost.
“Every season of Cobra Kai, while we try to take things up a notch and bring it to the next level in a lot of ways, we also try to stay true to the roots of what we love about this franchise.”
Season 5 of Cobra Kai debuts on Netflix on September 9, 2022.
