Colin Farrell Delivers Noir Excellence in Apple TV+’s ‘Sugar’ Trailer

Before we see him return as The Penguin, Colin Farrell is taking us back into the gritty neo-noir detective genre. In the first trailer for Apple TV+‘s new series Sugar, Farrell stars as John Sugar, a seasoned private investigator with a penchant for unravelling mysteries. Tasked with finding the missing granddaughter of Hollywood mogul Jonathan Siegel, Farrell’s Sugar uncovers more than he bargained for, including shadowy recesses of the Siegel family’s past secrets that were better off buried.

Directed by Fernando Meirelles, the upcoming eight-episode TV series is described as “a contemporary, unique take” on the classic private detective story. The official synopsis for Sugar reads, “Academy Award-nominee Colin Farrell stars as John Sugar, an American private investigator on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he will also unearth Siegel family secrets; some very recent, others long buried.”

A powerhouse ensemble cast joins Farrell, including established names like Amy Ryan, James Cromwell, and Anna Gunn. Rounding out the impressive lineup are Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Dennis Boutsikaris, Nate Corddry, Sydney Chandler, and Alex Hernandez.

Infused with neo-noir intrigue, the edgy first trailer for Apple TV+’s Sugar has everything you’d want in a gritty mystery series. Set against the backdrop of sun-drenched California, the trailer opens with a very John Wick vibe as Sugar, accompanied by his dog, cruises down the street in an open-top Corvette, his voiceover narrating, “Another beautiful day in California. Out here, I’m one of the good guys. But good and bad can be in the eye of the beholder.” Farrell’s trademark intensity and charisma are on full display as he tackles his latest case, plunging him into the heart of Hollywood’s underbelly.

As Sugar begins investigating Olivia’s disappearance, he soon realises the truth lies deeper than he imagined. Chasing down leads, he uncovers a web of deceit spun by those closest to her, exposing the darkness beneath the glitz and glamour. “These people. They’re lying. I just can’t figure out why,” says Sugar in the clip. With each revelation about the case, Sugar begins to question his own definition of justice in a city where corruption seems to run rampant.

“Someone once said, ‘Tip the world on its side, and everything loose lands in Los Angeles,’” Farrell’s voiceover intones toward the end of the two-minute trailer. “After all this time, is this place starting to turn me upside down?”
