Everyone’s favourite creepy nun is back in the habit with the first trailer for The Nun II, the next entry in The Conjuring saga – the highest-grossing horror franchise in history. And if we’re honest, we’re glad to see her. While the first instalment in this spin-off series—2018’s The Nun—didn’t exactly knock it out of the park, the title character definitely has the potential to hit a genuinely bone-chilling home run at some point, and hopefully that’ll be when this second outing hits cinemas on September 7.
Set in France in 1956, The Nun II opens with the murder of a priest—always an ominous sign—setting in motion a series of events that will see Sister Irene (a returning Taissa Farmiga) face off once more with the scariest nun that cinema has produced since The Blues Brothers’ Sister Mary Stigmata. Prepare yourself for plenty of jump scares, nightmarish entities lurking just outside of frame, and people screaming variations of “The power of Christ compels you!”
The trailer describes the nun in question—the demonic Valak (again portrayed by Bonnie Aarons)—as “the greatest evil in The Conjuring universe” and while she’d certainly make for unpleasant company at a dinner party, we’d argue that this franchise’s most insidious element is its propensity for being insufficiently scary on a regular basis. Here’s hoping director Michael Chaves—last seen helming 2021’s so-so The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It—has honed his horror instincts over the last couple of years.
If The Nun II doesn’t deliver the goods, fans of the franchise will have to wait for The Conjuring: Last Rites—the next instalment in the main series—which is yet to confirm a release date but will bring the series’ focus back to paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, hopefully recapturing the magic that made 2013’s original The Conjuring such a tense viewing experience. The Nun II hits cinemas on September 7. Check out the trailer above.
