Masks have become the new accessory, with millions of people now wearing them in order to help slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The problem is that with so many people trying to get their hands on masks, medical professionals are running short on supplies. That then causes even more of a problem, and that’s why we need an alternative to surgical masks and N95 masks. Fortunately, companies are stepping up with new ideas and approaches.
Apparel brands like Raleigh Denim, Buck Mason, and Los Angeles Apparel have started producing masks that can be purchased by the public, but that are also being donated to hospitals. Millions of people are also sewing their own masks. Dom Vetro has joined in the fight as well, creating a PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) Shield that not only protects but combines with other masks for added efficiency.
Dom Vetro’s Culver City factory is creating full-coverage face shields made of a translucent sheet of fog-free, high-clarity plastic. The plastic sheet attaches to industrial-strength fasteners added to any pair of glasses—prescription, sunglasses, safety glasses, or even goggles. The plastic sheet curls around your face, creating a shield that not only keeps airborne particles from reaching you but also prevent you from touching your face, which is a major source of infection. The shield has the added benefit of fitting comfortably over both surgical and N95 masks. It also doesn’t negatively impact your vision, either central or peripheral. The Shield is completely reusable and can be cleaned with just soap and water. It also comes with a specialty cleaning cloth. Additionally, you can have your shield customised with a personal message etched directly onto the shield.
“In light of current events,” says Ashely Bezamat, Dom Vetro founder, “we sought to find a way to use our factory and expertise to help protect those on the frontlines. The Shield is compatible with anyone’s existing eyewear and made from locally sourced materials to keep our production time as short as possible. Plus, it’s reusable, making far less wasteful than some of the other options currently out there. We hope that using what limited resources we have as an independent manufacturer, we can help those who are risking their lives to help us. We are also actively seeking donations to enable us to distribute Shields free of charge to medical personnel.”
