  • The New Balance Made in USA 990v7 drops globally on November 6, 2026.
  • The debut “Kool Grey” colourway will set you back AUD$350.
  • It features a premium pigskin suede, mesh, and leather upper.
  • The midsole rocks a noticeably softer FuelCell compound compared to the outgoing v6.
  • Support is driven by ENCAP technology, a CR device, and a new TPU midfoot shank.

I’ve worn almost every iteration of the 990 series, but these might be the brand’s best yet. Like a Porsche 911 or even an iPhone, the challenge for New Balance has been evolving a classic silhouette without losing its core identity. Since the original dropped back in ’82, they’ve done a great job of walking that fine line between heritage preservation and innovation. The new Made in USA 990v7 arrives as the seventh chapter in a four-decade story, and putting it on feet reveals exactly where the design team focused their energy to keep the ultimate dad shoe relevant for a new generation.

The most immediate difference I felt underfoot is the cushioning setup. While the previous v6 introduced FuelCell technology to the franchise, the v7 adopts a noticeably softer version of the foam to bump up energy return. When you pair that updated bounce with the familiar grey panel layouts of the upper, the shoe feels fresh while remaining instantly recognisable on the street. Of course, most of us will simply wear the sneaker with a pair of trousers, but it’s been designed as a deadset performance shoe to ensure that it functions just as well for pounding the pavement around the CBD all day as it does for light athletic use.

Let’s breaks down exactly what you’re getting for the AUD$350 asking price. I’ll take a closer look at the updated upper materials on the debut “Kool Grey” colourway, explore the new TPU midfoot shank providing stability alongside the softer foam, and outline the launch details for the highly anticipated November 6 drop.

Refined Upper Construction

New Balance approached the v7 with a design philosophy they’re calling “memories from the future,” aiming to balance familiarity with modern shaping.

You’d miss some of this stuff without a press release beside you, but take a look at the shoe up close, and you’ll notice subtle updates to the proportions and layering that give the classic design a much more streamlined look.

It’s a premium upper that relies heavily on traditional materials, combining high-quality pigskin suede with a breathable mesh base. Leather accents give the silhouette some structural rigidity, while the addition of synthetic suede sway bars helps lock your foot in place. The construction feels deliberate, maintaining the timeless character of the 990 series while stripping away any unnecessary bulk.

I also love the debut ‘Kool Grey’ palette that blends lighter grey suede around the toe box and eyestays with darker midfoot overlays to create visual depth. The signature N logo also gets a lined texture with a pale blue fill and soft yellow outline, adding just enough contrast to the monochromatic base.

Softer FuelCell and Added Stability

The biggest functional shift happens in the midsole. Pushing down on the foam, the v7 delivers a softer, more dynamic ride than its predecessor.

To balance out that plush FuelCell cushioning, New Balance has integrated a new TPU midfoot shank for structural guidance.

This new shank works in tandem with the brand’s tried-and-tested ENCAP technology and the signature CR device wrapping the heel. The result is a ride that feels noticeably more energetic and forgiving upon impact, yet entirely stable when you’re transitioning through your stride.

Cultural Impact and Release Details

To back up the launch, New Balance rolled out a global campaign featuring ambassadors ROSALÍA, Josh Allen, Cooper Flagg, and IU.

The lineup reflects just how deeply the 990 has penetrated different corners of culture across music, sport, and fashion. As Chris Davis, New Balance Brand President and Chief Marketing Officer, notes, the versatile excellence of the 990v7 makes it beloved by supermodels in London and dads in Ohio alike.

“The epitome of quality and craftsmanship, the 990v7 has been thoughtfully evolved, updated, and reimagined for today’s consumer,” said Chris Davis, New Balance Brand President and Chief Marketing Officer. “Born from running, the 990 has grown far beyond its original purpose, earning the admiration of marathoners, fashionistas, and comfort enthusiasts around the globe. That universal appeal, grounded in authenticity, utility, and enduring quality, is what continues to make the 990 unlike anything else in our industry. That versatile excellence of the 990v7 continues to make it beloved by supermodels in London and dads in Ohio alike.”

The shoe retains its premium manufacturing standards, carrying the Made in USA badge, which requires a domestic value of 70 per cent or more. The New Balance Made in USA 990v7 “Kool Grey” officially launches on November 6, 2026. You can secure a pair for AUD$350 directly through the Australian New Balance online store and selected local stockists.
