New Balance has expanded its 2000s-inspired lifestyle lineup with the introduction of the 983 (AUD$240). Launching on October 1 here in Australia, the silhouette addresses current market demand for aggressive, ‘maximalist’ cushioning by introducing a new midsole tooling featuring four visible ABZORB SBS pods. While recent high-profile drops like the 2040v5 carry the premium ‘Made in USA’ label (and price tag), the 983 arrives as a general release that sits as an alternative to the 9060 and 2010, making it an accessible daily driver.
Sneakerheads obsessed with New Balance’s performance-driven DNA will appreciate the engineering of the 983. The upper trades traditional suede for a breathable grey mesh base, and it’s been heavily layered with glossy synthetic patent leather overlays in a metallic blue. This combination keeps the shoe lightweight and well-ventilated for the warmer months ahead while providing rigid structural support for some of the locals stuck on their Euro summer vacation.
Underfoot, a dual-density foam setup surrounds the elliptic ABZORB SBS pods. This is tech we’ve seen on numerous occasions with lifestyle NB silhouettes, and it’s guaranteed to provide a plush, shock-absorbing ride without sacrificing the stability required for all-day wear. Note the stitch-and-turn collar that finishes the interior, locking the heel in securely.

To support the release, New Balance tapped ambassadors Coco Gauff and Aminé for a global campaign focused on styling versatility. The imagery features “Coco clones,” dressed in a wide range of outfits to demonstrate how the model adapts across different personal aesthetics. Gauff noted that the shoe was designed to anchor various looks, offering a visually distinct yet highly adaptable design for everyday wear. “The idea for the campaign actually came from a vision meeting I had with the New Balance team. I thought it would be cool to showcase the different sides of my personality through style.”
“It was fun bringing the vision to life with Aminé and getting creative with styling the shoe in different ways. I love pieces that are fashion-forward but still easy to wear, and the 983 goes with any outfit,” continued Gauff.

The new silhouette lands at a time when the sneaker scene is pivoting hard toward tech-runner aesthetics. Much like the cultural dominance of the 1906R, the New Balance 983 bridges the gap between heritage performance and modern streetwear. Is it a cop? It’s a yes for us. When compared directly to the popular 9060, the 983 feels significantly more streamlined and less bulky, making it easier to style for everyday wear while retaining that aggressive, sculpted midsole. We loved the New Balance 2010, and this new model offers even more premium comfort while pushing the design language into a new dimension.
New Balance 983 officially releases in Australia on 1 October 2026. It will be priced at AUD$240, and will be available online at NewBalance.com.au and through premium local retailers (e.g. Up There Store, SUBTYPE, and Laced).
