French luxury house Givenchy has for years been synonymous with refined contemporary fashion, but for the label’s Fall 2022 Pre-Collection, the brand is leaning on legacy. The latest release ushers a fierce nod to Givenchy’s original tailoring heritage, with a stunningly curated catalogue of men’s and womenswear that blurs the lines between traditional and timeless.
Following the success of the Spring-Summer 2022 runway showing, creative director Matthew M. Williams is once again playing with proportion and scale. The Fall 2022 Collection features a raft of everyday statement pieces for women and men that emphasises the concept of ‘nuanced volumes’, best typified with signature hardware, craft and
innovative techniques. According to Williams, it’s all about exploring Givenchy House archetypes through a contemporary lens.
“I am really focused on exploring Givenchy’s heritage while also looking toward the future. I believe fashion is relevant when it reflects what it means to live today; there’s a constant tension between everyday reality and the precision, elegance and extravagance of the couture tradition,” Williams said.
This time around, Givenchy has added a new “Art” denim collection, highlighted by gauze overlays and ‘time-intensive printed, destroyed, bleached, and overdyed’ effects. There will also be special treatments like lasered monograms, seen in part across the bleached jacquard.
While womenswear is undoubtedly the hero of the collection, demonstrated through the vast use of lace, a Givenchy special that provides a counterpoint to razor-sharp tailoring, menswear hasn’t been left out in the cold. Structured suiting with concealed buttons are the stand-out pieces in the Fall 2022 Collection, working to seamlessly blend a detachable, hooded underpiece to the silhouette. Further, a unique nylon coat cops a heightened textural experience through the interesting use of hardware in dark finishes.
Givenchy has also revealed two original men’s accessories — the G-Zip bumbag and
camera bag will make their debut as part of the new collection. They will each appear alongside the TK-360, a fully knitted sneaker that comes complete with a new technology that Givenchy claims will let the wearer walk directly on the knit.
Sure, the men’s side doesn’t exactly cop the haute couture elements that the women’s draped calf leather handbags do, but the silhouettes are undeniably strong and a return to structural elements is always welcomed. The new Givenchy Fall 2022 Pre-Collection will be available in stores and online from May 2022.
