Breitling Brings Back the AVI 765 1953

Breitling is making old things new again, re-issuing the much loved 765 AVI chronograph. In its new form as the AVI Ref 765 1953 Re-Edition, the pilot’s chronograph takes notes from its vintage forebear, delivering a mid-century military design done in steel, rose gold, and platinum.

The original 765 came out 67 years ago and changed how timepieces were looked at thanks to a bold look attributed to its rotating 12-hour bezel and oversized Arabic numerals. Those oversized numerals increased legibility, making it a favourite for aviators. Of course, that was the intention, as the 765 was inspired by the onboard clocks that Breitling’s Huit Aviation Department had been making since the 1930s. Borrowing from that history, the new 765 also incorporates the in-house B09 calibre, which is hand-wound, operates at a frequency of 4 Hz, and has a 70-hour power reserve. This particular movement was developed to be used specifically for historical re-editions. Breitling did make a special edition of this movement, adding in a column wheel as well as running seconds, a 15-minute counter at three o’clock, and a 12-hour counter at six o’clock. Just like the original, the re-issue has a domed crystal.

The 41mm case is 11mm thick. The hands and numerals are treated with lume that is faux aged. The watch offers 30-metre water resistance and comes on a leather strap. As mentioned, you can select from steel, rose gold, or platinum for the case. The platinum case is limited to just 153 examples, while the Rose Gold will be available in a run of 253. The steel case is the most prolific, with 1,953 examples being made. The platinum and rose gold cases come with black dials, while the steel comes with a blue dial. Each watch will be individually numbered. The watches are currently available for pre-order, with the steel version going for $8,600, the rose gold for $22,850, and the platinum for $39,000.
