Glashütte Original Senator Chronometer

Glashütte Original Senator Chronometer has a Heart of Gold

German watchmaker Glashütte Original has unveiled a limited edition Senator Chronometer that features a new white gold case inspired by the shape of historic marine watches of the 19th and early 20th century. Limited to 25 pieces, this chronometer is distinguished by proven precision, incredible legibility and exceptional aesthetics.

The term “chronometer” refers to timekeeping instruments used for navigating the high seas by determining the precise time of day and the exact position of a ship. Glashütte developed its first marine chronometer in 1886 and continue the line over one hundred years on, with each new piece tested and certified by the German Calibration Service.

Beyond its white gold case, the 2020 Senator Chronometer stands tall thanks to its dial featuring solid gold and gold-plated movement. The Chronometer features a small seconds dial at 6 o’clock and the running time dial at 12 o’clock. Panorama Date is located at 3 o’clock, which rolls over at midnight.

A discreet day/night indication makes it easier to set the time. It’s located in a round opening within the running time display: from 6 o’clock in the morning until 6 in the evening the small circle appears in white, from 6 p.m. on, it is black.

Like its ancestors, this Chronometer is defined by the concave shape of the bezel, which allows more visual space for the dial. The bezel is fitted with a delicate knurled edge, which served to improve grip on marine chronometers of the past.

The timepiece is powered by the Calibre 58-03 manual winding movement, with a silver-plated wheel bridge and coating in rose gold. The other frame components are also coated entirely in galvanic rose gold.

The movement features a refined second-stop mechanism that jumps minutes ahead, maintaining the correct relationship between minutes and seconds even when the watch is reset. The sapphire crystal caseback encourages one to take-in the classically-styled features in all their rose gold glory and the hand-engraved balance cock.

Rounding off the new Chronometer’s design is a dark blue Louisiana alligator leather strap with a fold-over clasp or pin buckle closure in white gold.

Just 25 Glashütte Original Senator Chronometers are available, each carrying a price tag of around $45,000 AUD.
