Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Quantieme

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Quantième Hits the Goldilocks Mark

When it comes to fine watchmaking, Swiss icon Jaquet Droz has the lineage for success. For close to three centuries, the brand has produced elegant timepieces that push the boundaries of modern horology and in 2020, it has slipped a fresh addition into its much-loved Grande Seconde range. Most famous for its unique, off-centre display, the Grande Seconde has served the test of time, quite literally, with the latest take paving a novel aesthetic path. For the first time ever, the Grande Seconde Quantième now includes a 41mm diameter.

Sliding straight in-between the existing 39mm and 43mm pieces, the new addition marks a decidedly forward-thinking step for the traditional Swiss icon. The 41mm size has been long-awaited by fans, but rather than simply reduce the size of the existing 43mm version, Jaquet Droz opted to completely rebuild the framework, resulting in a unique and authentic creation. The most obvious update is, of course, the 41mm case itself. According to Jaquet Droz, the case was thinned slightly to ensure a lighter feel on the wrist; one that was more compatible with the new diameter. But the redesign didn’t stop there.

Jaquet Droz also added new finishes, specially developed for the new Grande Seconde Quantième collection. A wide range of Grande Feu enamel dials, in ivory tones, as well as a blue, burgundy and anthracite are now available. According to the brand, each shade was specially crafted for the collection based on extensive research into enamel powders and hand-firing techniques. On the dial, you’ll find a date displayed at 6 o’clock with an 18-carat red gold applique. If you are looking for a more refined and dulcet tone, you’re also in luck. The new Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Quantième 41mm range has matte black, titanium grey sandblasted and sandblasted silver dial variations.

All in all, seven new Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Quantième 41mm watches have been unveiled, each offering a subtle hint at the wearer’s personality. The first four versions are offered with the case, appliques and oscillating weight in red gold on an alligator strap to match the Grand Feu enamel dial, while the final three feature a steel case.

As is the case with most Jaquet Droz pieces, the new Grande Seconde Quantième 41mm collection makes use of a silicon balance spring to control the isochronism, helping to make the watch resistant to temperature changes, magnetic fields and shock. The self-winding movement ensures a 68-hour power reserve, with the oscillating weight providing an unobstructed view of the movement in action.

The new Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Quantième 41mm collection is available now and retails for AUD$28,050 for the Grande Feu enamel dial, 18-karat red gold case versions and AUD$13,300 for the three remaining variations.
