Montblanc’s Stunning Limited Edition 1858 Monopusher Chronograph

At this year’s Watches & Wonders, luxury brand Montblanc introduced two new 1858 timepieces. As with other models in the iconic range, both draw inspiration from original Minerva chronographs and pocket watches from the 1920s and 1930s. Between the two, our personal favourite was the limited edition 1858 Monopusher Chronograph. Featuring a special bronze alloy on the stainless steel case, it delivers brilliant colour contrast and signature accents within a perfectly realised vintage framework.

Taking direct cues from the original Minerva chronograph, Montblanc’s new iteration hosts a striking black dial with a beige-coloured railway track, along with two counters at three and nine o’clock. Other vintage details include a telemeter scale, beige-coloured numerals, and cathedral-shaped hands coated in rose-gold. Both the hands and the numerals feature SuperLumiNova for consistent legibility.

To actualise the Spirit of Mountain Exploration, each limited edition 1858 Monopusher Chronograph includes a special bronze alloy on the 42mm case. As the alloy ages, it develops a rich and distinctive patina. There’s also a “Spirit of Mountain Exploration” engraving on the caseback to drive home the vintage theme. Powering the watch is MB. 25.12, which indicates elapsed time by way of a central second hand and a 30-minute counter. White-coloured hands-on both subdials generate a clever study in contrasts while improving readability.

True to its name, Montblanc’s new watch has a single pusher integrated into the crown, which controls the start, stop, and reset function. The bronze alloy edition comes with a matching beige-coloured NATO strap that was made in a historic French manufacture. Two other unlimited models are available in stainless steel. One comes with a stainless steel bracelet and the other comes with a cognac-coloured calfskin strap.
