TAG Heuer’s Latest Carrera Chronograph Celebrates the Golden Age of Formula 1

The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph has carved out its own niche in the world of watches. Known as the driver’s choice, its relationship with motorsports goes back to the 60s when TAG Heuer debuted a sporty timepiece with enough elegance to catch the eye of racing fans. That love affair continues and already this year we’ve seen the release of a stunning red dial model. That beautiful vintage-inspired piece successfully recreated the aesthetics of the brand’s original ’60s chronographs. Next up is a yellow-gold special edition that harks back to the 70s. Its colouring will be instantly recognisable to racing fans – Ayrton Senna’s John Player Special Lotus anyone? – and TAG has doubled down on the elegance while also unveiling a never-seen-before dial.

Building on nearly sixty years of heritage, this new addition to the Carrera line takes its design cues from a much-loved blueprint, but also offers updates that will be a hit with modern collectors. Remember, of TAG Heuer’s watches, the Carrera in yellow gold was CEO Jack Heuer’s favourite. Indeed, he used to present it to Formula 1 winners to reinforce its reputation as the watch of champions.

Yes, the yellow-gold case is going to catch your eye first, but for TAG fans, the dial is the real treat. For the first time ever, TAG has inverted the black and gold colourway, so the deep black dial has two contrasting golden-gilded subdials. These are paired with simple gold hour markers and the lower dial features a discreet permanent second indicator. A neat date window is tucked away at 6 o’clock.

Aside from the new dial configuration, the other standout feature is the 18K 3N yellow-gold case. At 42mm wide it’s comfortably sized and classically styled. The graceful pushers and crown soften the sporty look somewhat and, as expected, the case back houses a sapphire crystal through which you can view the Carrera’s engine. Like the red dial limited edition, the yellow-gold model is also powered by the in-house Calibre Heuer 02 automatic movement. Rounding out this striking watch is a high-quality alligator leather strap.

This iteration of TAG Heuer’s iconic motorsports watch references a golden era of Formula 1 racing. At the time, a gold TAG chronograph was presented to winning divers at the trackside, cementing its place in motorsports mythology. TAG Heuer has faithfully recreated that look for a modern audience and we’re confident it’s going to take pole position.
