Ever looked at a can of Red Bull and wondered what it might look like as a watch? TAG Heuer has. And it’ll do more than give you wings, turning 10 years with Oracle Red Bull Racing into an F1 watch that could almost pass for an energy drink strapped to your wrist.
From the red-and-blue ‘Pepsi’ to the black-and-red ‘Coke’, watch collectors have spent decades giving soft-drink nicknames to watches. Those familiar colour combinations can give a watch its own identity, but those nicknames, particularly the soft-drink varieties, rarely have anything to do with an official partnership or collaboration.
The new TAG Heuer Formula 1 Solargraph x Oracle Red Bull Racing brings the team’s blue, red and yellow colours to the brand’s compact 38mm Formula 1 design. The signature colours bring most of the energy, but this watch doesn’t need the caffeine; it runs on a lighter kind of power.
A Red Bull Racing Watch That Doesn’t Hold Back
TAG Heuer doesn’t need to reinvent the Formula 1 Solargraph to celebrate a partnership that’s been keeping time in F1 since 2016. We saw how colourful the collection can get with the $3,200 orange Solargraph released for Zandvoort’s final Dutch Grand Prix, and like those raucous orange-coloured fans in the stands, this latest edition holds nothing back. This time TAG Heuer takes what you know and love about the established design and gives it a complete Red Bull Racing makeover, with enough wing-sprouting, solar-powered energy to make it as fit for the pits as it is for a podium finish on Max Verstappen’s wrist.
The blue sunray-brushed dial is surrounded by a red minute track, while a bright yellow seconds hand and yellow-framed date window complete the team’s familiar colour scheme. I can already feel my hands quivering. It features a blue TH-Polylight bezel, black lacquered hands, applied Super-LumiNova indices, a sandblasted steel case and a three-row bracelet to strap it all in. Even the sandblasted steel has a muted, almost aluminium-like finish, like those Red Bull cans that inspired the racing watch in the first place.
Like many of those nicknamed watches, TAG Heuer has kept the Red Bull Racing logo off the dial. If you’re looking for it, turn the watch over to find the team’s branding alongside a chequered-flag pattern on the steel caseback. It’s simple, discreet and marked with a Special Edition engraving. And it all comes inside Red Bull Racing-themed packaging. No free energy drinks, though.
The result is recognisably Red Bull without spilling your can all over the watch face. Whether you need that much racing-team identity on your wrist is another question; there’s no mistaking the kind of energy this special edition Solargraph celebrates.
1/3Powered by Light, Not an F1 Engine, No Added Caffeine
Underneath all the energising colour scheme is TAG Heuer’s TH50-00 Solargraph movement, a solar quartz calibre that converts natural and artificial light into energy. Since including a caffeine injection system in a watch is clearly out of the question, TAG Heuer opted for the power of the sun instead.
Just one minute of direct sunlight provides enough energy for a full day of operation, better than the recommended maximum intake of two 250ml cans a day.
If it does run empty, you can fully charge the watch in less than 40 hours of light exposure, keeping it running for up to 10 months in complete darkness. Even if it stops, 10 seconds of light is enough to get it going again, while its rechargeable accumulator is rated to last up to 15 years.
Like the ingredients list on the side of a can of Red Bull, this watch has plenty of the necessary components to give it wings long after the Grand Prix is done and the cans are finished.
